The elegantly styled GT Coupe and the beautiful yet ferocious Vantage

The high-performance sports cars “Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe” and “Aston Martin Vantage” are both characterized by the long nose and short deck style typical of FR coupes, but the Vantage has a more compact body size. The GT Coupe is characterized by its sleek and beautiful design, while the Vantage is characterized by its bulging rear fenders and iconic grille design.

Both cars are basically two-seaters, but the GT Coupe can add a folding +2 seat as an option. Although rear seat passengers must be under 150cm tall, the GT Coupe is more practical. On the other hand, the Vantage has a compartment behind the seats that can be accessed from inside the car, ensuring sufficient usability for a two-seater.

A GT coupe packed with advanced electronic control technology

The engine specs of the two cars are very similar, and no surprise there, as they both use the same AMG-made 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine, the M177. However, due to differences in tuning, the Vantage produces around 80 PS more power.

However, when comparing the 0-100km/h acceleration times, the GT Coupe takes 3.2 seconds and the Vantage 3.5 seconds. The GT Coupe, which has less maximum power and is about 200kg heavier, achieves superior acceleration performance, likely due to the high traction performance of its AWD and the use of a wet multi-plate clutch for power transmission, rather than the typical fluid torque converter.

Furthermore, the GT Coupe is packed with electronic controls such as electronically controlled dampers and differentials, continuously variable electronically controlled stabilizers, a four-wheel steering system, a retractable rear spoiler, and a “Drift Mode” that distributes 100% of the torque to the rear wheels. The Vantage also uses electronic controls, but with a minimal configuration centered around a differential and dampers.

A German high-performance grand tourer and a British pure sports car

The GT Coupe is priced at nearly 2 million yen more, but considering its extensive equipment, it’s actually a good deal. The GT Coupe even comes equipped with a hydraulic lift mechanism that raises the front of the car by 30mm, minimizing the inconvenience of riding in a high-performance coupe.

While a GT coupe packed with electronically controlled devices is capable of effortlessly driving fast in any situation, the Vantage’s distinctive character lies in the natural handling and driving pleasure that come from its perfected chassis dimensions, including a 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution thanks to the transaxle structure.

There is no doubt that both cars have outstanding performance as both sports cars and grand touring cars, but the GT Coupe is closer to a grand touring car that combines comfort and speed, while the Vantage is closer to a sports car that appeals to the driver’s sensibilities.
