PORSCHE 911 CARRERA GTS

Wider and lower mid-engine Corvette Z06

We compare the specs of the newly reborn mid-engine Corvette Z06 and the Porsche Carrera GTS, the king of rear-engine sports cars.

The 911 has a sports car-like styling, but compared to the wide and low Corvette with a width of 2025mm, it gives off a more subdued impression. The Corvette’s mid-engine layout is so impressive that it makes the 911 look like a normal coupe. However, the rear-engine 911, despite being a sports car, is equipped with an extra two-seater rear seat, making it more practical for everyday use than the Corvette.

Both cars, with the engine at the rear of the vehicle, have a luggage room in the front hood, but the Corvette also has a luggage room behind the engine that is large enough to carry two golf bags. Although its use is limited because the high heat of the engine is transferred to it, the Corvette’s usability is not as bad as it looks.

Body size = Length 4685mm x Width 2025mm x Height 1225mm

Wheelbase = 2725mm

Vehicle weight = 1720kg

Tire size = 275/30ZR20 (front) 345/25ZR21 (rear)

Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

Body size = Length 4553mm x Width 1852mm x Height 1296mm

Wheelbase = 2450mm

Vehicle weight = 1595kg (DIN)

Tire size = 245/35ZR20 (front) 315/30ZR21 (rear)

Despite the difference in engine displacement, the acceleration performance is equal.

Although the two cars differ greatly in displacement and engine power, their full-throttle acceleration is similar: the Corvette Z06 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 2.9 seconds, while the 911 Carrera GTS can also do so in 2.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package.

Unlike the V8 engine found in the standard Corvette, the Corvette Z06’s engine is a race-derived engine with a flat-plane crankshaft and DOHC engine head that produces 646 PS at a high 8,550 rpm.

The 911 Carrera GTS, on the other hand, is equipped with an electric turbocharger that applies boost pressure regardless of exhaust flow rate, and a drive motor with a maximum torque of 150Nm is mounted on the transmission in a “T-hybrid system,” resulting in a maximum system output of 541PS and a maximum torque of 610Nm. In addition, with its light weight and the large rear wheel load unique to RR, it demonstrates acceleration performance approaching that of the Corvette Z06.

Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

Engine type = Horizontally opposed 6-cylinder gasoline turbo engine + motor

Displacement = 3591cc

Engine maximum output = 485PS/6500rpm

Engine maximum torque = 570Nm/2000-5500rpm

Motor maximum output = 56PS (41kW)

Motor maximum torque = 150Nm

System maximum output = 541PS/6500rpm

Maximum torque = 610Nm/1950-6000rpm

Transmission = 8-speed DCT

Drive system = RWD

The vehicle price is cheaper for the 911 Carrera GTS,

The price of the Corvette Z06 is 25.8 million yen, and the 911 Carrera GTS is more than 2 million yen cheaper. However, the Carrera GTS has a wide range of options available, and depending on your selection, it may exceed the price of the Corvette Z06.

However, the Z06 also offers the expensive “Z07 Performance Package” option, which includes carbon aero parts that generate powerful downforce, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, carbon fiber wheels, etc. The two cars are competitors not only in terms of specs but also in terms of price.

We compare the GTS, the first 911 to feature a hybrid system, with the pure-engine 911 Carrera.

Is the hybrid Porsche 911 still the best? “Compared to a pure-engine 911”

The GTS, the first 911 to feature a hybrid system, has finally arrived in Japan. The first major change in the 911’s 60-year history since the introduction of water-cooling, the hybrid, will bring about changes to the 911’s driving performance. Let’s clarify the differences by comparing it with the 911 Carrera, which retains its pure engine. (Reprinted and re-edited from the May 2025 issue of GENROQ)
