Independently developed next-generation Supra

The current fifth-generation Supra, jointly developed with BMW, has attracted worldwide attention as it marks the first time in 17 years that the car has been revived since the fourth-generation A80 model was discontinued in 2002. There have been rumors that production of its sister model, the BMW Z4, will end with the current model, and there have been doubts about the appearance of the next-generation Supra.

However, Dave Crist, Toyota’s North American Group vice president, has hinted at the possibility of developing the next-generation model even on its own, making its release highly likely.

Expected sleek and aggressive exterior

Based on the various information obtained so far, the scoop team has created a CG image of what the car will look like. The front end is expected to have a fairly aggressive design. The lower part of the large trapezoidal grille incorporates a small slit-type grille, a characteristic of the Supra.

The headlights feature Toyota’s signature hammerhead design, with four slim, sharp projectors built in. The side view has a flowing silhouette, and the C-pillars have been stepped to create a sense of dynamism.

Newly developed 2.0-liter turbo engine surpasses BMW

Regarding the powertrain, we have received information that it will be released as a BEV (battery electric vehicle) in early 2024. However, considering the slowdown in the global EV market, it seems that a hybrid that combines an internal combustion engine and a motor is the most likely option.

The most likely candidate at this stage is the newly developed 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine that Toyota unveiled at the Multi-Pathway Workshop, held jointly with Subaru and Mazda. In this case, we can expect it to have the same or even higher maximum output as the 435 PS of the BMW-made 3.0-liter inline-six turbo engine that powers the Supra A90 Final Edition.

If development proceeds smoothly, we expect the next-generation Supra to debut in late 2026 or early 2027. It will be interesting to see if the pure Toyota Supra that fans are eagerly waiting for will be born.
