MINI
“Big space in a small car” born from British ingenuity

Sir Alec Issigonis, the original MINI and its chief designer.
The MINI story begins in the late 1950s, a time of fuel shortages and the need for economical efficiency following World War II. At the time, the major British car manufacturer BMC (British Motor Corporation) had two brands under its umbrella: Austin and Morris. To maximize interior space within a limited overall length, the company developed what was then an innovative layout: a front-mounted transverse engine and front-wheel drive.
BMC named these compact cars the Austin Seven and the Morris Mini-Minor, and released them simultaneously in 1959. Although they were dual-branded, the MINI name gradually became symbolically independent. In 1962, the two names were unified into the Austin Mini, and in 1969, the standalone MINI brand was established.
Wheels and wings tell the story of MINI’s brand value

The latest MINI emblem. Reflecting the times, it features a simple, highly visible design.
The circle and wings that form the MINI emblem are a traditional motif that has been passed down since the brand’s inception, and their combination symbolizes the individuality of MINI. In an official release from 2017, the BMW Group explained, “Maintaining the traditional basic element of the winged wheel ensures the logo’s immediate recognition.” They also stated, “The chrome wheel and stylized wings are known worldwide as symbols of driving fun, individual style, and premium quality,” emphasizing the design’s role in visualizing the values that MINI stands for.
The cultural background of “wings” common to British brands

Fellow British brands Bentley and Aston Martin also use wings in their emblems. For Bentley, they symbolize strength and nobility, while for Aston Martin, they symbolize speed and elegance. While there seems to be no official information, the wings on the MINI are likely meant to express a familiarity and a lightness that brings freedom to everyday life. In the common language of the wing motif, MINI may have translated the culture of the common people in Britain at the time into freedom and agility.
Logo evolution: Three stages of modernization

[3] One of the emblems used in the early days of the first generation MINI. The word MORRIS can be faintly read above a red bull. [4] This particular car has a pentagonal emblem. [5] The emblem on this car is a circle and wing design, with the words MINI COOPER inscribed in red within the circle.
The origins of two brands
The first generation Morris MINI Minor, introduced in 1959, was badged with the Oxford City coat of arms, a red bull and three waves in a circle with wings on either side, while the Austin Seven had a pentagonal badge and different logos depending on the sales channel.
Single branding and design organization
When MINI became an independent brand in 1969, the multiple badge systems were streamlined, but some circular variations and a shield-shaped derivative emblem called the “MINI shield” still existed.
The introduction of the “winged wheel” as a standard was triggered by the introduction of the new MINI Cooper in 1990. While it retained the design of the emblem worn by the Morris MINI Minor, the letters “MINI COOPER” were engraved in a circle instead of the bull and three waves. In 1996, a version with the four letters “MINI” written in a circle was introduced and was fitted to all models.
A fresh start under BMW
When the brand was relaunched under BMW in 2001, it retained this traditional motif but evolved into a three-dimensional, metallic logo. It established a modern and sophisticated brand image as a symbol of the new MINI. In 2018, the brand transitioned to a flat design to accommodate digitalization. The new logo, which eliminates shadows and only retains the circle and wings, is simple yet expresses the agility and freedom that is characteristic of MINI.
