Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Both the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class share a strong ladder frame structure and high ground clearance. Furthermore, their styling features a square shape that exudes the ruggedness of an off-road SUV, making them both ideal for driving on rough roads.
The Wrangler retains the traditional design of round headlights and a seven-slot grille, but features a large off-road bumper that gives it a more rugged look. On the other hand, the G-Class retains the traditional square body, but adds a modern, refined design. The lean, linear form emphasizes robustness, while also exuding the luxury that is characteristic of Mercedes.
The differences between the two concepts are clearly reflected in the interior design. The ability to remove the roof and doors to adapt to a variety of uses is a unique feature of the Wrangler, but the roof structure protrudes, creating a surprisingly oppressive feeling. It’s hard to say the interior is spacious considering its large size.
On the other hand, the G-Class boasts a spacious cabin and high livability and cargo capacity. The G-Class also features a luxurious interior that you wouldn’t expect from an off-road vehicle. While the Wrangler prioritizes practicality and convenience when driving off-road, the G-Class can be said to be a model that combines off-road capability with luxury.

The off-road-specialized Wrangler and the all-rounder G-Class

Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The Wrangler is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine that produces 272 PS and 400 Nm of torque, while the G-Class is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo diesel engine that produces 367 PS and 750 Nm of torque.
For off-road driving, the diesel engine’s advantage of being able to produce greater torque at lower speeds is apparent, but the Wrangler, which is primarily sold in the United States, primarily uses a gasoline engine. Both vehicles are equipped with high-performance 4WD systems and differential locking systems, but the Wrangler, which is equipped with a stabilizer disconnect function, seems to be more geared towards serious off-road performance.
The G-Class has excellent off-road performance, but is also equipped with air suspension for a comfortable ride, making it suitable for all-round driving, from on-road to off-road. Furthermore, a 48V mild hybrid system has been added to the new G-Class, further improving its acceleration in city driving.

Should toughness be the priority, or should luxury be compromised?

Jeep Wrangler

Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The Wrangler’s price is reasonable considering its off-road-specific equipment and features. The G-Class, on the other hand, has excellent off-road capabilities, but is positioned as Mercedes-Benz’s luxury SUV, so its price is more than twice as high. However, it has a luxurious interior and a full range of comfortable features, making it a well-balanced model suitable for everyday use.
Of course, even a Wrangler specialized for off-road driving can be used on a daily basis. Although there are some inconveniences due to its structure, the Wrangler is a car that allows you to fully enjoy the off-road capabilities that only a Jeep can offer, and it would be difficult for outdoor-oriented users to find a car that gives them more satisfaction in owning than the Wrangler.
