BMW M5

Same powertrain as the M-exclusive model “XM Label”

The BMW M5, which had its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK in July 2024, was unveiled for the first time in Japan at the FREEDE by BMW event in Azabudai Hills. This is the seventh generation M5, and it is the first to feature the plug-in hybrid M Hybrid system.

The 4.4-liter V8 M TwinPower Turbo engine, combined with a specially developed plug-in hybrid “M Hybrid system,” delivers impressive performance with a maximum system output of 535kW (727PS) and maximum torque of 1000Nm. This is the same as the M-specific model “XM Label,” with the XM slightly higher maximum output (748PS) but the same maximum torque. The V8 engine alone produces a maximum output of 430kW (585PS) and maximum torque of 750Nm. The electric motor alone produces a maximum output of 145kW (197PS) and a nominal maximum torque of 280Nm, but a pre-gear stage can increase the effective torque at the transmission input to 450Nm. The high-voltage battery located in the floor between the wheelbase has an energy capacity of 22.1kWh, allowing for a maximum range of 67-69km (WLTP) and a top speed of 140km/h in EV mode.

The car is said to be packed with motorsports-derived technology, similar to that used in the BMW M Hybrid V8, which came in second place in the Fuji 6 Hours, the seventh round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), held at Fuji Speedway in September this year.

Race track package and other standard features

The exterior is a high-performance sports sedan, combining sportiness and elegance. It is 75mm wider at the front and 48mm wider at the rear than the base 5 Series. In addition, the front is equipped with an M-exclusive aero bumper, garnishes, and an M-exclusive kidney grille with self-illuminating BMW Iconic Glow, while the rear is equipped with an M carbon rear spoiler and an exclusive large rear diffuser on the M-exclusive bumper.

The interior is equipped with the “BMW Curved Display” consisting of the latest 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display. M-colored ambient lighting emphasizes that it is an M model. Other M-specific equipment is used throughout, including the “M leather steering wheel” with a flat bottom shape exclusive to M models, electrically adjustable “M multifunction seats,” and “BMW Head-Up Display.”

The Japanese model comes standard with the M Carbon Exterior Package, which includes a CFRP roof that is 30 kg lighter than the standard steel roof, and the Race Track Package, which includes special wheels and M carbon ceramic brakes, and increases the top speed to 305 km/h. The company is proud to say that the price has been kept at 19.98 million yen, the same as the previous model. Sales in Japan are scheduled to begin in November 2024.
