The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ (PHEV), which is 20mm wider than the standard E-Class, has been added to the E-Class lineup. It features a large-opening front apron designed exclusively for the E 53, as well as an illuminated radiator grille, giving it an exterior that clearly shows it is an AMG performance model.

The side section of the car is based on the E-Class’ distinctive “cab-backward design,” and features fender accents with the “TURBO HYBRID” emblem and side skirts connecting the two wheel arches, elevating the styling to an image of AMG’s motorsport activities. It rides on 10 twin-spoke 20-inch AMG aluminum wheels. The rear section features a red-bordered “E 53” emblem, signifying an AMG performance hybrid. The AMG spoiler lip in the same color as the body, the rear apron with diffuser fins, and the two rounded exhaust ends on each side add to the racing atmosphere.

Numerous reinforcements have been added to the bodyshell to increase rigidity. A strut tower bar between the front suspension strut mounts improves lateral dynamics, while a thrust field under the engine reduces twisting of the front end. An additional strut is also fitted to the rear axle, resulting in a more precise and stable ride.

A driving range of nearly 100km in EV mode

The 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder turbo is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system that combines a high-output motor and a large-capacity lithium-ion battery. In EV mode, the sedan has a driving range of 101 km, and the station wagon has a driving range of 97 km.

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder “M256M” turbo engine with a high-output motor and a large-capacity lithium-ion battery. It boasts both overwhelming power and high efficiency.

The M256M increases the turbo boost pressure to 1.5 bar, and by using newly programmed software and adding a cooling system, the engine alone produces a maximum output of 449 PS (330 kW) and a maximum torque of 560 Nm. A high-output permanent magnet synchronous motor integrated into the transmission produces 163 PS (120 kW) and 480 Nm, enabling agile acceleration when starting. Under normal conditions, the maximum system output is 585 PS (430 kW) and maximum torque is 750 Nm, but when “RACE START” is used, the maximum output can be increased to 612 PS (450 kW).

Despite boasting overwhelming driving performance, the sedan has a range of 101km in EV mode and the station wagon has a range of 97km (WLTC cycle), which is sufficient for travelling around urban areas.

A racing interior that highlights the “AMG”

The interior features an AMG-exclusive steering wheel and seats, embroidered with the AMG logo, and an embossed AMG crest to highlight the special model.

The interior design integrates the latest digital technology found in the new E-Class with exclusive AMG equipment. The standard interior trim is a “Light Silver Metallic Interior Trim” that gives a high-quality impression. The “AMG Performance Steering Wheel (Nappa Leather)” with its boldly narrowed grip is equipped with an “AMG Drive Control Switch” with LCD display and aluminum paddle shifters, and “AMG” lettering is engraved on the bottom of the center spoke.

The AMG-exclusive sports seats, made of high-quality nappa leather, feature a structure that maintains a stable driving position. These seats not only provide a firm hold but also provide comfort on long drives. The front seat backrests are embroidered with the AMG logo, and the headrests are embossed with the AMG crest.

Standard equipment includes comfort features such as a Burmester 4D surround sound system, heat-reflecting and noise-reducing glass, and door closing supporters. If you select the paid option AMG Carbon Package, you will be equipped with an AMG Performance Steering Wheel (Carbon Fiber/MICROCUT) and AMG Carbon Fiber interior trim.

The infotainment system uses the third-generation MBUX, which supports routine functions and third-party apps. The 14.4-inch media display and 12.3-inch cockpit display feature AMG-specific menus and content. PHEV-specific menus are also available, including energy flow, EV mode range, and charging status.

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe features impressive blister fenders.

After test driving the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe, I realized that it’s not the same as the previous Go-San!

The CLE was released as a combination of the E-Class and C-Class Coupes. Incidentally, the previous AMG version of the E-Class Coupe only came in the “53” model, while the C-Class Coupe came in the “63” and “43” models. And the AMG version of the CLE only comes in the “53” model for now. It is unclear at this point whether the “63” will actually be released in the future, but let’s first take a look at the potential of the “53” model.
