MINI Cooper Convertible

A major update based on the fourth generation

The first and second generations of the MINI Cooper Convertible have been manufactured at the Oxford plant.

The MINI Cooper Convertible, announced in October 2024, is based on the previous model, but incorporates the design of the new MINI Cooper in the headlights, interior, etc.

On November 18, 2024, production of the MINI Cooper Convertible began at MINI’s Oxford plant in the UK for the first time since 2015. Currently, the MINI Cooper 3-door and MINI Cooper 5-door are manufactured at Oxford. This new model, based on the previous convertible, will be added to the lineup with significant updates to the interior and exterior.

The Oxford plant is one of the oldest automobile factories in the world, celebrating its 110th anniversary in 2023. Vehicles have been produced continuously here since 1913. Stefan Richmann, head of the MINI brand, commented on the start of production of the new MINI Cooper Convertible in Oxford:

“We are thrilled that the MINI Cooper Convertible is once again being produced at the home of MINI, in Oxford. The new MINI Cooper Convertible is truly unique in its segment as a compact open car that combines limitless freedom with great emotion.”

Manufacturing base moves from the Netherlands to the UK

The first production model of the new MINI Cooper Convertible has rolled off the production line at the Oxford plant in the UK.

After the rebirth of the new MINI, the first and second generation convertibles were manufactured at the Oxford plant, but the previous model was manufactured at VDL Nedcar in the Netherlands. With the discontinuation of the Clubman, the convertible production base was moved back to Oxford.

The MINI Cooper Convertible is produced across three of BMW Group’s UK manufacturing sites: body stamping and sub-assembly are carried out at the Swindon plant, the 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder turbo petrol engine is manufactured at Hams Hall plant in North Warwickshire, and all components are brought together at the Oxford plant for final painting and assembly.

Between 2004 and 2008, 160,000 first-generation MINI Convertibles were produced at MINI’s Oxford plant. Featuring retro styling reminiscent of the original Mini and chrome rollover arches behind the rear seats, the car proved immensely popular. The second-generation model, featuring updated styling but retaining the iconic drop-down hinged trunk, was launched in 2009. By 2015, 165,000 units had been produced at the Oxford plant.

Production of the third-generation MINI Convertible was temporarily transferred to VDL Nedcar in the Netherlands, where the Oxford plant produced the Clubman station wagon. VDL Nedcar produced more than 150,000 MINI Convertibles until production ceased in 2023.
