The ninth round of the 2024/2025 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the Tokyo E-Prix, was held on May 18th, with heated competition taking place on Odaiba, one of the world’s most famous urban circuits. The winner of this much-anticipated race was Nissan Formula E Team’s Oliver Rowland. The British driver, who has been showing overwhelming strength this season, marked his third win of the season and further extended his lead at the top of the rankings.

However, behind them, the Porsche team showed impressive teamwork. Last season’s champion, Pascal Wehrlein, competing in the works TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, came in second, earning his third podium of the season. Daniel Ticktum, competing in a Porsche customer car for CUPRA Kilo, took third place, achieving his first podium finish. Jake Dennis of the Andretti Formula E team, also equipped with a Porsche powertrain, came in fourth, meaning that three of the top four cars were equipped with Porsche powertrains.

Wehrlein started from third place in qualifying. He had a chance to take the lead midway through the race, but was a little slow in using attack mode and was unable to get past Roland, sadly finishing in second place. Nevertheless, he has steadily accumulated points and has risen to second place in the rankings. The CUPRA Kilo 99X Electric WCG3 driven by Ticktum is a customer machine based on the package of the car that has won Porsche the team’s title for the past two seasons in a row. He started from second place in qualifying and showed impressive driving, even taking the lead at one point during the race.

Meanwhile, Antonio Felix da Costa of TAG Heuer Porsche retired after making contact with the car in front while running in 6th place. Although he was unable to join the fight for the podium, he showed his speed by advancing to duels in qualifying just like his teammate.

Ticktum thrilled with first podium finish

Florian Modlinger, Porsche Formula E Director, commented:

“Having three cars equipped with Porsche powertrains in the top four is the culmination of our efforts. The team is particularly proud of Cupra Kilo and Ticktum’s first podium finish. Pascal also showed a great performance that put us very close to victory. I believe we can show an even stronger performance in the next race in Shanghai.”

Wehrlein, who came in second, spoke about the difficulty of the double-header race in Tokyo: “I’m happy with the result, but of course I wanted to win. The way I used attack mode put me at a slight disadvantage and I was forced to play defensively. Yesterday was a tough day, so I feel positive about today’s result.”

After achieving his first podium finish, Ticktum expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s my first podium, and I can’t believe it. I’d like to thank CUPRA Kilo and Porsche for their support. The car was great, and the team’s efforts have paid off.”

The next race, the 10th, is scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China in late May. Attention will be focused on whether the Porsche team, which has made a number of podium finishes, will be able to get revenge on Nissan.
