The new van, which was unveiled under heavy camouflage, has already undergone long-distance testing on public roads and will also undergo cold-weather testing in Sweden this winter.

Mercedes-Benz Vans is developing a new van based on the VAN.EA (Mercedes-Benz Van Electric Architecture), a new fully electric platform that adopts a modular system and is highly flexible and scalable. All medium and large vans released to the market from 2026 will be based on the VAN.EA.

The heavily camouflaged prototype has been undergoing testing on public roads, mainly in Europe. It is similar in size to the current V-Class and features sliding doors on both sides.

A prototype built to test the chassis, electric powertrain, battery and high-voltage components will undergo a long-distance test drive from Stuttgart, Germany, to the Arctic Circle in early June 2024. Testing is currently focused on the interaction of onboard components, and cold weather testing will also take place in Sweden this winter.

A new van for every need

The successor to the V-Class is scheduled to debut in 2026. Currently being tested is a model equipped with a fully electric powertrain, but Mercedes-Benz has explained that it will be able to meet all needs, and it is believed that an ICE-equipped model is also being prepared.

Mercedes-Benz Vans explained that the introduction of the VAN.EA will enable a clear differentiation between luxury minivans in the high-end segment and commercial vans. The new van will have a wide lineup ranging from family use to VIP shuttles and ultra-luxury limousines in the luxury segment.

The on-board technology will cater to a wide range of customer needs, with both FWD and AWD versions available, and all vehicles will be equipped with the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz operating system MB.OS, an 800V charging system and a 22kW AC charger.

The V-Class has been a popular premium minivan since its introduction in Japan in 1988. The updated V-Class, which was announced in Europe in 2023, has finally begun its introduction in Japan.
