Range Rover SV P550

The clean-lined Range Rover SV

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, whose first generation debuted in 1979, has been on sale for over 40 years without significantly changing its stance, with improvements made to the interior, exterior, and powertrain. A major facelift was carried out in 2018, and in 2024, the “G 580 with EQ Technology,” equipped with a fully electric powertrain, was introduced to keep up with the times.

Like Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which is also promoting the electrification of its lineup, will be offering the Range Rover SV as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, which combines a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder gasoline turbo with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery. In EV mode, the car has a driving range of over 100km on a single charge.

The G 580 with EQ Technology has been given a special exterior, including LED headlights and a grille covered in black panels, but it still retains the rugged details that are characteristic of the G-Class. The Range Rover SV, with its beautiful flush-surfaced form, is 328mm longer, 224mm wider, and 107mm longer in wheelbase. Both are equipped with lithium-ion batteries, but the BEV G 580 with EQ Technology is 150kg heavier, weighing in at over 3 tons.

The G-Class features newly developed four-wheel independent motors

When Mercedes-Benz electrified the G-Class, they did not incorporate the existing fully electric architecture, but instead developed a new four-wheel independent motor. Two motors, each producing 108kW, are installed on the front and rear axles of the traditional ladder frame, squeezing out a maximum system output of 587PS (432kW) and a maximum torque of 1164Nm. The Range Rover SV P550’s plug-in hybrid powertrain is based on a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder gasoline turbo. Both have a maximum system output of over 500PS, but the G 580 with EQ technology achieves a massive torque of 1164Nm.

The ultimate in luxury Range Rover interior

The G 580 with EQ technology cockpit features two 12.3-inch displays, the latest in Mercedes-Benz technology. The interior is luxurious, typical of Mercedes, with chrome accents and ventilation designed to resemble a jet turbine.

The Range Rover SV offers a high-quality interior worthy of being called the pinnacle of the brand. Functions are concentrated in a 12.3-inch touch display placed in the center of the instrument panel, and all switches on the center console have been eliminated. The Range Rover SV P550 is priced at 2.44 million yen more than the G 580 with EQ Technology. However, its beautiful and clean appearance, reminiscent of an ultra-luxurious living room, is a worthy reason to choose this car.

Meanwhile, the G 580 with EQ technology is a one-of-a-kind vehicle that combines the Geländewagen with a fully electric powertrain. Customers looking for a “highly efficient G-Class” will likely see no other options. However, Jaguar Land Rover is currently developing its first fully electric model, the Range Rover Electric, and is currently testing it around the world. After its official debut, scheduled for 2026, we will be able to compare it with the G 580 with EQ technology.
