M8 (F92)

Based on the 8 Series for the first time in a while

The G15 8 Series Coupe, the successor to the 6 Series and the first car to be called the 8 Series in a long time, was announced on June 15, 2018, just one day before the Le Mans 24 Hours final. It was based on the Concept 8 Series Coupe, which was unveiled at the 2017 Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza.

The chassis is the CLAR LG modular platform for FR/AWD, made of steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber, and is derived from the CLAR LK platform used in the G32 6 Series. The suspension is a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, combined with the Adaptive M Professional suspension with dampers and electronically controlled active stabilizers.

Before the launch of the production car, the racing version, the M8 GTE, competed in the 2018 IMSA and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an unusual schedule, but the 8 Series-based M8 did not make its debut until June 2019, another year later.

Powered by a powerful 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8

There are two body types: coupe (F92 type) and convertible (F91 type). The powertrain is basically the same as the F90 type “M5”, with a 4.4-liter V8 DOHC twin-turbo “S63 type” unit that produces a maximum output of 600 PS/6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 750 Nm/1800-5600 rpm, and is equipped with a ZF 8-speed torque converter automatic 8HP76 “M Steptronic”. While the drive system is primarily rear-wheel drive, it also uses 4WD “M xDrive” that distributes torque steplessly and variably.

In addition to allowing the driver to change the response and characteristics of the engine, steering, suspension, etc., the car also features a non-vacuum brake booster that reduces weight by 2 kg, and an M-specific integrated brake system that provides high braking power and control in all conditions.

The M8 Competition, available in both coupe and convertible versions, features a 4.4-liter V8 with a maximum output of 625 PS and a blacked-out kidney grille, emblem, door mirrors, and rear spoiler. The M8 Coupe and M8 Coupe Competition both accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, but the M8 Coupe Competition achieves a 0-200 km/h time of 10.6 seconds compared to the M8 Coupe’s 10.8 seconds. Also, by gentleman’s agreement, the top speed is normally limited to 250 km/h, but with the optional M Driver’s Package, this can be increased to 305 km/h.

Four-door version also available

Then, in October 2019, a four-door version, the F93 “M8 Gran Coupe,” was added. Its features are essentially the same as the coupe and convertible, including a 600 PS/750 Nm 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine, an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission, and the M xDrive 4WD system. A 625 PS Competition version is also available. However, despite its dimensions of 5150 mm in length, 1945 mm in width, 1420 mm in height, and 2000 kg in weight, it boasts the same performance as the coupe, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.2 seconds.

In 2022, the 8 Series Coupe, Cabriolet, and Gran Coupe received a facelift, while the M8 also received a facelift with an illuminated kidney grille, adaptive LED headlights, a new front bumper, and a new infotainment system. Production of the M8 then ended in June 2024, following the end of the 8 Series.
