BMW M8 Competition Coupe
While the M5 will debut in 2024 and feature the latest BMW design, the BMW M8 Competition Coupe is based on the second-generation 8 Series that was released in 2018. While the M5 features a prominent kidney grille and a sharp, muscular form, the M8 Competition Coupe features a horizontal kidney grille, narrow headlights, and a clean style typical of the first generation of BMW design.
It’s easy to say that it’s a difference in segment and category, but the four-door sedan M5 is 225mm longer and 150mm taller. The M5 with a hybrid powertrain is also 490kg heavier than the M8.

The M5 is based on a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline turbo and is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain developed by BMW M. The system boasts a maximum output of 727 PS and a maximum torque of 1000 Nm.
The BMW M8 Competition Coupe, on the other hand, has the same 4.4-liter V8 gasoline turbo, but with a maximum output of 625hp and a maximum torque of 750Nm, which are more modest than the M5. Nevertheless, the M8 Competition Coupe takes advantage of its light weight to outperform the M5 in the 0-100km/h time by 0.3 seconds.

The M5 features the BMW Curved Display and the latest infotainment system, BMW iDrive, which supports touch control and natural voice interaction. The M8 Competition Coupe’s interior, with its classic meter cluster, automatic gear selector on the center console, and independent 12.3-inch center display, gives a sense of the passage of six years.
Although they are “M High Performance Models” specially tuned by BMW M GmbH, they have two contrasting styles: a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe. The M8 exudes a personal atmosphere not found in the M5 sedan. Unfortunately, production of the M8 series will end in 2024, although a specially equipped Japanese market limited edition, “The Final Edition – 1 of 8,” was introduced. At present, there is no information on the development of the third-generation 8 Series/M8, but we hope for a revival.
