Decision to withdraw following WEC regulation changes
Starting with the 2025 season, the WEC will require teams to compete with two hypercars, and Lamborghini, which had been running a one-car program, has decided to suspend its program.
The Lamborghini SC63 LMDh made its WEC debut in the 2024 season-opening race, the 1,812km Qatar Race. While many teams entered two cars, Lamborghini competed with just one. The #63 Lamborghini Iron Links car faced tough competition in the Hypercar class, where nine manufacturers competed, and only managed to finish in 10th place in the fourth race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Lamborghini ultimately finished 8th in the manufacturers’ championship, with Daniil Kvyat, Mirko Bortolotti and Edoardo Mortara finishing 31st in the drivers’ championship. In a statement regarding the suspension of Lamborghini’s WEC participation, Lamborghini Squadra Corse, Lamborghini’s motorsport division, explained the reason for the suspension as follows:
“Competing at the highest level of motorsport has been an honor for Lamborghini Squadra Corse and an ambition for the coming years. However, changes to the FIA WEC sporting regulations, which will make it mandatory to enter two cars in the Hypercar class from 2025, have changed the conditions under which Lamborghini entered the championship and no longer fit with our motorsport strategy.”
Continues participation in the US IMSA with the SC63 LMDh
Although Lamborghini Squadra Corse has decided to suspend its WEC program, it will continue to compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Lamborghini has reassessed its SC63 LMDh program and will withdraw from the WEC in 2025, but will continue to compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the United States. The company has announced that it will continue development of the SC63 LMDh.
The company also announced that it will suspend its WEC program with the Huracán LMGT3 Evo 2 and focus on developing the Temerario GT3 throughout 2025. The customer racing car, the Temerario GT3, will complete testing in 2025 and is scheduled for official unveiling afterwards.
