The engine won’t die?

Since the exhaust pipes can be seen, there is no doubt that this prototype is equipped with an internal combustion engine.

Last year, Porsche unveiled the Macan Electric. The original plan was to continue selling the current engine-powered model alongside the new EV model, with the next-generation model being the only electric model available. However, the adoption of EVs has been slower than expected, and it has become clear that many customers still prefer vehicles with internal combustion engines. In light of this situation, Porsche has announced an “expansion of its product portfolio with engines or plug-in hybrid systems.”

Could a Macan with an engine be coming soon?

Since all the other models in the photos taken at the test base are Porsches, it’s highly likely that this vehicle is a Porsche Macan with an Audi Q5 mule body. The exterior of the prototype spotted this time is completely Audi, so there are no design hints about the next-generation Macan.

The presence of exhaust pipes suggests that an internal combustion engine version of the Macan will be released. If this test vehicle is indeed a Macan mule, a full prototype will likely appear in the coming months. Basing development on the existing Q5 would also have the advantage of accelerating development of the Macan and reducing costs.

Shares powertrain with Audi Q5

The current Q5 is equipped with a mild hybrid system on the newly developed “PPC” platform. The European powertrain is available with a 2.0-liter TFSI or TDI engine with a maximum output of 150 kW, and a 3.0-liter TFSI V6 engine with a maximum output of 270 kW. All will be equipped with a mild hybrid system that combines a 7-speed DCT and an 18 kW motor.

We expect the next-generation Macan with this engine to share some of these features and be released after 2027.
