MG EXE181
A tribute to the 1950s speed record vehicle

The MG EXE181 was created as a homage to the original MG EXE181, which set a land speed record of 246 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1957.
MG, a subsidiary of China’s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), will unveil the fully electric super sports concept “MG EXE181” for the first time in the world at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the MG brand.
Led by Carl Gossam, Advanced Design Director at SAIC Design Advanced London, the EXE181 concept car pays homage to the original MG EX181, which crossed the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA in the late 1950s and recorded a speed of 246 mph (395 km/h) in 1957.
The team at SAIC Design Advanced London, based in Marylebone, and Gossam have designed the new MG EXE181, a fully electric concept car that combines style, innovation and efficiency, while cleverly retaining the distinctive design elements of the original, and imagining a future MG land speed record vehicle.
Also used for future aerodynamic development

Although the MG EXE181 was created as a pure design concept, there are also plans to use it to develop aerodynamics for future BEVs.
The MG EXE181 also appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2024, impressing many visitors with the vision of the future of the British brand MG. Carl Gotham, who led the design of the MG EXE181, expressed his joy at receiving the award:
“Creating the MG EXE181 was an incredible opportunity for us designers. We wanted to celebrate MG’s illustrious history as a manufacturer of bold, innovative sports cars that push the boundaries. Using cutting-edge materials and technology, we’ve visualized the all-electric record-breaker of the future.”
“The MG EXE181 is a purely concept car conceived to excite people. However, we designed a fully electric super sports car with a one-seater cockpit with the aim of conducting aerodynamic tests.”
Additionally, the “Rising OS Intelligent Cockpit System Design” developed by SAIC’s R&D Innovation Headquarters won the iF Design Award in the User Experience category. This HMI system incorporates algorithms that enable more precise customization for drivers and passengers, and SAIC aims to introduce it to MG and other SAIC brands in the future.
