Ferrari’s latest flagship, the 849 Testarossa, was introduced in Japan shortly after its announcement. It is not a completely brand new model, but rather the successor to Ferrari’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid, the SF90 Stradale, which debuted in 2019. For comparison, we have chosen the 296 GTB, the second mass-produced PHEV following the SF90 Stradale.
As mentioned above, while Ferrari is using the SF90 as its base, it has revamped the exterior of the 849 Testarossa to the point of being close to a full model change. The distinctive black band, a design icon of the latest Ferrari, has been adopted for the front section. The sharp, edgy form allows you to feel the evolution of the design when placed next to the 296 GTB with its glamorous curves.
The body size of the 849 Testarossa, which is a higher-class car, is 153mm longer, 38mm taller, and 50mm longer in wheelbase. In terms of weight, both cars are equipped with heavy lithium-ion batteries, but the compact 296 GTB is about 80kg lighter.

Ferrari has made extensive updates to the 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine featured in the 849 Testarossa. By modifying the cylinder head, engine block, exhaust manifold, etc., the engine alone has achieved a massive 830 PS. By adding two front and one rear motor, the system’s maximum output exceeds 1000 PS.
The 296 GTB is the first Ferrari brand to use a V6 engine (since the Dino 246). A 3.0-liter V6 turbo is combined with an electric motor, producing a maximum system output of 830 PS. Both have a top speed of 330 km/h, and the 849 Testarossa, which has more power, beats the more powerful 0-100 km acceleration by 0.6 seconds.

While digital cockpits with large displays prominently displayed are becoming a trend, Ferrari has chosen not to place a display on the center console in the latest 849 Testarossa, but instead to use a digital band that integrates the main control and passenger screen between the top and bottom of the horizontally-oriented dashboard.
The interior of the 849 Testarossa has been significantly changed from the SF90. A bold color trim with a ship’s sail motif is laid out at the bottom of the dashboard, and a compact shift gate is positioned to appear to float within it. Compared to the simple interior space of the 296 GTB, the 849 Testarossa has been given a special touch befitting a flagship model.
Ferrari recently announced its first fully electric super sports car, the Elettrica, but considering the environment in which it will be used, a PHEV, which has an EV mode and an internal combustion engine, would be the more common choice.
The 849 Testarossa has increased in price by over 10 million yen from the SF90, resulting in a price difference of 25.26 million yen between it and the 296 GTB. If you have the budget, the latest flagship 849 Testarossa’s performance and interior and exterior are attractive. However, even though it has been four years since its debut, the 296 GTB still boasts top-level performance.
