Improved torque splitter

Improvements to the torque splitter installed in the RS 3 from 2021 have made cornering more precise.

Since the introduction of the torque splitter in 2021, the Audi RS 3 has reached a new level of driving dynamics: Fully variable torque distribution on the rear axle not only improves agility but also stability at all speeds.

The RS 3’s “torque splitter” actively controls torque distribution between the left and right rear axles using two electronically controlled wet multi-plate clutches. By distributing more torque to the outer rear wheels during cornering, understeer is reduced, resulting in agile cornering.

On straights, torque is distributed equally to the left and right rear wheels, and the rear clutch is released when cruising. By transmitting torque only to the front axle, fuel consumption is reduced. By making detailed adjustments to the improved new model, the network of chassis control systems is implemented more accurately, allowing for faster and more precise control.

Specially developed Pirelli performance tires

The new Audi RS 3 has significantly improved its class record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, thanks to significant advancements in the torque splitter and tires.

The RS 3 comes standard with Pirelli’s uniquely tuned Pirelli P Zero R tires, with the Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tires also available as an option.

Brake torque vectoring also provides subtle adjustments that help the RS 3 avoid understeer immediately upon corner entry and turn more willingly: the torque splitter delivers torque to the rear wheel on the outside of the curve while slightly braking the rear wheel on the inside of the curve.

This fine-tuned brake intervention allows the RS 3 to follow corners more precisely than before, positioning itself more quickly and ideally at the apex of the corner, enabling the driver to switch quickly into the acceleration process and reach higher speeds on the corner exit.

The standard Pirelli P Zero R tires (265/30 front, 245/35 rear) also play a major role in the car’s excellent handling. Tuned specifically for the RS 3, the multi-compound tread features softer sidewalls and a harder compound in the center, providing excellent grip on both dry and wet roads. This provides precise handling at all speeds.

The optional semi-slick Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres offer intense driving pleasure, especially on the race track. These tyres feature an asymmetric tread pattern and a compound derived from motorsport, which significantly improves grip and performance, especially in dry conditions.
