We’ll compare the compact crossover SUV “Volkswagen T-Roc” and “MINI Countryman.” The T-Roc is a coupe-style SUV that features a sporty exterior design. The R-line grade, which gives it a sporty appearance, is equipped with special bumpers and side skirts, further enhancing its dynamic atmosphere.
The MINI Countryman, on the other hand, retains the MINI identity while incorporating the strength and practicality of an SUV with a design and size that stands out both in the city and outdoors. It is considerably larger than the T-Roc, being 200mm longer in length, 20mm wider, and 70mm taller.
While the interior of the T-Roc is simple and horizontal, the Countryman has a unique design that exudes the playful spirit of MINI. At first glance, the design appears classical, but the circular display in the center of the instrument panel is packed with the latest digital technology.
If you choose the R-line version of the T-Roc, you’ll get special sports seats and a steering wheel. From a practical standpoint, the T-Roc’s neatly arranged switches make it easier to use, but the Countryman is clearly superior in terms of exclusivity.

Diesel vs. Gasoline: Both Look and Feel the Same

Volkswagen T-Roc

MINI Countryman
The powertrain configurations of both vehicles are very similar. Although there are differences between the diesel engine (150 PS, 360 Nm) and the gasoline engine (204 PS, 300 Nm), both have the characteristic of producing large torque from low revolutions, and the 7-speed DCT’s quick shifting allows for efficient use of the low revolution range. The full-time 4WD systems also have similar structures, although the control is different.
Even so, the ride quality is quite different. The T-Roc has a coupe-like SUV look, but coupled with the diesel engine’s lack of high-revving capabilities, it has the straightforward driving feel that is characteristic of Volkswagen. The R-line is fitted with a special sports suspension and large-diameter wheels and tires, but the basic characteristics remain the same.
The Countryman features a wide torque band and sharp acceleration that are unique to its direct-injection gasoline turbo engine. Although the go-kart-like handling feel that is characteristic of MINI is suppressed compared to its predecessor, the ride is sporty despite its SUV-like appearance.
In terms of fuel economy, the diesel-engine T-Roc has an overwhelming advantage. The average fuel economy in the WLTC mode for both cars is 18.6km/L for the T-Roc and 13.1km/L for the Countryman, with a significant difference in fuel economy especially when driving in urban areas and on highways.

Cost performance and character as a 4WD model

The newly added T-Roc “TDI 4MOTION” is a little pricey for a compact SUV, but considering its fuel economy, it’s not bad value for money. It will be an attractive option for users who want low running costs and stability during long-distance cruising.
The Countryman’s “S ALL4” is priced higher than the T-Roc, as it is positioned at the top of the range. The Countryman is also available in a diesel model for ¥5.09 million, but it is only available in front-wheel drive (FWD). The “S ALL4” combines the stability and off-road capabilities of 4WD with a sporty ride, making it a grade you’ll want to choose if you’re driving an SUV-style Countryman.
The price difference between the two cars is about 240,000 yen, with the Countryman being more expensive. The T-Roc has better operability in each part, but the Countryman has a more spacious rear seat. Ultimately, the deciding factor will likely be cost performance and differences in character.
