The S-Class has a Mercedes-like appearance

The seventh-generation W223 Mercedes-Benz S-Class debuted in 2020. The exterior, which pursues Mercedes-Benz’s design concept of “Sensual Purity,” features smooth surfaces with reduced edges to maximize aerodynamics. Nevertheless, the large Mercedes-Benz-like grille sits at the center of the front section.

The seventh-generation BMW 7 Series, which had its world premiere two years after the S-Class, featured a unique and modern exterior, in stark contrast to the traditional S-Class, including split headlights and a kidney grille that ran through the bumper.

The S-Class is available in both short (3105mm) and long (3215mm) wheelbases, but the S 450 d 4MATIC is only available in the short wheelbase, while the 7 Series is only available in the long wheelbase (3215mm).

A 3.0-liter inline-6 clean diesel engine with a rich torque profile

The S 450 d 4MATIC is powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder clean diesel engine with a maximum output of 367 PS, combined with the Mercedes-Benz-familiar auxiliary drive system “Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).” In contrast, the 740i is powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gasoline turbo with a maximum output of 381 PS, and is equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system.

The maximum output is almost the same, but the diesel turbo S 450 d 4MATIC’s maximum torque is 750Nm, which is significantly higher than the 740i’s 520Nm. Especially in urban areas with a lot of stop-and-go traffic, you may feel the benefits of a diesel engine with more torque. However, the 7 Series also has a lineup of “740d xDrive” equipped with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel.

The more traditional “S-Class”

The cockpit of the S 450 d 4MATIC features a 12.3-inch meter display and a vertical 12.8-inch OLED media display. Even though it is the base model, it boasts the quality and equipment befitting a top Mercedes-Benz model. In contrast, the 740i is equipped with the “BMW Curved Display” which combines a 12.3-inch and a 14.9-inch horizontal screen. Compared to the traditional S-Class, the 7 Series has a more modern cockpit.

The S 450 d 4MATIC is priced at about 1 million yen cheaper than the 740i. The 7 Series, which uses a long wheelbase for all models, has a sufficient amount of rear seat space. If you want to choose a long wheelbase for the S-Class, the starting model is the S500, and the price exceeds 20 million yen. If you want a long wheelbase, the 7 Series is the one for you.

Compared to the S 450 d 4MATIC, which offers stability with all-wheel drive (AWD) and a Mercedes-like exterior, the 740i is 1 million yen more expensive but offers a high level of comfort. If you choose the 7 Series, it may depend on whether you can accept its unique and sharp interior and exterior.

Vehicle price

Mercedes-Benz S 450 d 4MATIC 15.56 million yen

BMW 740i 16.42 million yen
