The new body is sportier

Comparing the body size of the new BMW 1 Series with the previous model, the only difference is the overall length of 4,370 mm (+15 mm compared to the previous model) and the overall height of 1,450 mm (-15 mm). The wheelbase and overall width are the same, so it doesn’t seem like the platform has changed significantly.

The 1 Series has been a hatchback with a front-wheel drive since the third generation, and the fourth generation continues to follow suit. However, it has a new design for the front grille, giving it a sportier look.

Both engines are downsized turbo units with a 1.5-liter inline three-cylinder, but the new model is equipped with an improved version of the previous model’s engine.

However, the new model incorporates a mild hybrid system, with a motor that produces a maximum output of 20 PS/5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 55 Nm/0-2000 rpm. The adoption of a mild hybrid is expected to improve acceleration at low speeds and eco-friendliness.

There is not much difference in price, so you should choose the new model.

The new model is roughly the same grade as the old model, but the price is only 20,000 yen higher. Considering the recent rise in costs, this may be the result of the importer’s efforts. Moreover, the new model is a mild hybrid.

As mentioned above, the new model has a new body design that gives it a sportier feel. It’s a matter of taste, but the new model is probably more refined.
