Tesla Model Y and Audi Q4 e-tron both get major improvements

We compare the fully electric compact SUVs, the Tesla Model Y and the Audi Q4 e-tron. The main improvements to the new Model Y, announced in January 2025, include a revamped interior and exterior design and enhanced functionality. The exterior retains the distinctive grille-less bumper, but the headlamps and taillights have been changed to feature straight lines. The interior remains minimalist and clean, with no unnecessary decoration. Almost all operations within the car are controlled via a larger 15-inch touchscreen, and an 8-inch touchscreen has been added to the rear seats.

In contrast, the improvements to the Q4 e-tron have focused on enhancing driving performance, with design changes kept to a minimum. The front continues to feature the octagonal single frame grille, with different color schemes for the standard “Advanced” grade and the “S line” grade, which features a sporty appearance. The geometrically designed instrument panel features the latest digital cockpit and touchscreen, but still retains a moderate number of physical switches, making the Q4 e-tron appear easier to operate.

Comparing the rear seat space of the two cars, the Q4 e-tron is also quite spacious, but the Model Y is slightly more spacious. Also, the luggage capacity with two occupants is 1,490 liters for the Q4 e-tron, while the Model Y is 2,138 liters. The Model Y, which is slightly larger in body size than the Q4 e-tron, can be said to have better livability.

Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD

Body size = Length 4790mm x Width 1920mm x Height 1624mm

Wheelbase = 2890mm

Vehicle weight = 1990kg

Tire size = 255/40R20

Audi Q4 45 e-tron Advanced

Body size = Length 4590mm x Width 1865mm x Height 1630mm

Wheelbase = 2765mm

Vehicle weight = 2120kg

Tire size = 235/55R19 (front), 255/50R19 (rear)

It’s not easy to beat Tesla in specs

The Model Y is available in two types: RWD and AWD long range, while the Q4 e-tron is only available in RWD. The previous model’s specifications were the same as the base Volkswagen ID.4 Pro, but the Q4 e-tron’s powertrain performance has been significantly improved with this latest improvement. However, it still cannot compete with the Model Y.

The Model Y’s 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.9 seconds for RWD and 4.3 seconds for AWD, surpassing the Q4 e-tron’s 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds. The Model Y’s range is 547km for RWD and 635km for AWD, while the Q4 e-tron’s range is only 613km despite a significant increase in power output, which is 19km longer.

When comparing RWD vehicles, the Model Y has better acceleration performance and the Q4 e-tron has a longer range. However, compared to the Model Y’s AWD, the Q4 e-tron is inferior in both acceleration performance and range. It is not easy to beat Tesla in terms of EV specs. The areas where Audi can compete with the Model Y will likely be in areas outside of specs, such as ride comfort, handling, and safety.

Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD

Type of drive battery = Long Range

Maximum output = Front 158kW (215PS), Rear 220kW (299PS)

Maximum torque = Front 240Nm, Rear 350Nm

Transmission = 1-speed fixed

Drive system = AWD

Audi Q4 45 e-tron Advanced

Drive battery type = Lithium-ion battery

Rated output = 89kW (121PS)

Maximum output = 210kW (286PS)

Maximum torque = 545Nm

Transmission = 1-speed fixed

Drive system = RWD

The Q4 e-tron has undergone major improvements, but the Model Y remains strong

The Model Y Long Range AWD is priced at 6,476,000 yen, while the cheapest Advanced version of the Q4 e-tron is 7,100,000 yen. Not only is it inferior in specs, but the Q4 e-tron is also about 600,000 yen more expensive. Moreover, the price difference compared to the Model Y RWD (5,950,000 yen) is over 1 million yen. Another advantage of the Model Y is that it maximizes the benefits of choosing a Tesla EV with unique services such as remote software updates via OTA (Over the Air) and Superchargers capable of charging up to 250kW.

With significantly improved motor specs and now compatible with CHAdeMO’s 125kW fast charging, the Q4 e-tron is competitive against EVs from major European manufacturers. However, it’s not up to the task of competing with Tesla. Unless you have a specific reason for wanting to drive an Audi mid-size EV, we’re forced to recommend the new Model Y.
