New interior and exterior! Small Caddy with a more rugged look

We compare the new and improved imported mid-class SUVs, the Cadillac XT4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. The XT4, which has been on sale since 2021, is Cadillac’s smallest SUV. Meanwhile, the GLC is Mercedes’ best-selling SUV in Japan, ranking second in sales volume for 2024. The XT4 is slightly smaller in body size, falling exactly between the GLA and GLC. However, the XT4 offers slightly more knee room in the rear seats. While the GLC offers more cargo space with the rear seats folded, the XT4 is superior when carrying five passengers.

The exterior of the XT4, characterized by its vertical LED headlights, has been brushed up overall to make it look more rugged, and the newly added 33-inch curved display with 9K resolution in the interior is eye-catching. On the other hand, although the GLC’s equipment has been carefully selected, it still retains the elegant appearance and high-quality interior that are characteristic of Mercedes.

Gasoline engine vs. diesel engine

Cadillac only offers a 2.0-liter gasoline turbo engine, while the GLC 220d is equipped with a 2.0-liter diesel engine. Both vehicles are equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission and AWD, but the GLC’s diesel engine and hybrid system offer superior power performance and fuel economy. However, the XT4’s gasoline engine also boasts comparable specifications, and its cylinder deactivation system improves highway fuel economy.

The XT4 is not sluggish like traditional American cars, and its weight is 170 kg lighter than the GLC, making it a nimble car to drive. Both have ample power performance, so it’s hard to say which is better, but compared to the GLC, where it’s hard to choose anything other than a diesel, the gasoline-engine XT4 will likely have a strong appeal.

The classic mid-size SUV, the GLC, and the unusual XT4

The vehicle price is 7.9 million yen for the XT and 8.19 million yen for the GLC. The XT4 is about 300,000 yen cheaper, and is also more luxuriously equipped with genuine leather seats and an electronically controlled active sports suspension. Of course, it is also equipped with just the right amount of safety support functions. Although the GLC is a cheaper grade, its equipment has not been significantly reduced, and the popular “AMG Line Package” option is still available.

The GLC 220 d 4MATIC Core is a grade that aims to lower the price by eliminating excessive equipment. However, the XT4 is cheaper than that. Above all, the XT4’s interior and exterior, which have a different style, will look fresh to eyes accustomed to European cars. If there is one drawback, it would be that it is only available with left-hand drive.
