Enlarged A8 Single Frame Grille

The A8 reigns as Audi’s flagship. The current fourth-generation model debuted in 2018 and underwent a major update in 2022, incorporating the latest design language, including the introduction of a large chrome-rimmed “single frame grille.” In contrast, the current S-Class, despite being the entry-level model “S 450 d 4MATIC,” has a majestic exterior that is typical of Mercedes-Benz.

Like the S-Class, the A8 is available in both a standard body and a long wheelbase with expanded rear seat space. The A8 55 TFSI quattro featured here is only available in the standard body in Japan. The overall length is almost the same, but the wheelbase is 3000mm, 105mm shorter than the S 450 d 4MATIC.

The two cars have almost the same body size, but while the S-Class has the spaciousness of a luxury saloon, the A8 has the agility of a sports sedan from the side view.

A diesel turbo that really shines in stop-and-go situations

The A8 55 TFSI quattro combines a 3.0-liter V6 “TFSI” gasoline turbo with a 48V mild hybrid system, producing a maximum output of 340 PS. The S 450 d 4MATIC is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder clean diesel with a maximum output of 367 PS and an auxiliary drive unit “Integrated Starter Generator (ISG)”.

In terms of torque, the diesel turbo S 450 d 4MATIC exceeds the A8 55 TFSI quattro by 250 Nm. In urban areas and other situations with frequent stop-and-go traffic, the torque-rich diesel turbo will be beneficial. On the other hand, the A8 55 TFSI quattro’s V6 engine has the advantage of a smooth engine feel and high quietness.

Although it’s not flashy, the 3 million yen price difference is attractive.

The S 450 d 4MATIC cockpit features a combination of a 12.3-inch meter display and a vertical 12.8-inch OLED media display. It features a modern, luxurious interior with square ventilation and an instrument panel that extends to the left and right doors.

Although the A8 55 TFSI quattro is equipped with a digital meter display, the meter cluster and the automatic transmission selector on the center console give it a slightly outdated feel. Nevertheless, the simple horizontal interior has the calmness of a luxury car and is likely to give passengers a sense of security. The rear seat comfort is superior to the S 450 d 4MATIC with its longer wheelbase, but the A8 55 TFSI quattro also has sufficient headroom and legroom.

The price difference of 3 million yen for this entry-level model is due to the brand power of Germany’s leading brand, Mercedes-Benz. However, although it is not particularly flashy, the A8 55 TFSI Quattro, with its Audi-like simplicity and robustness, should be an attractive option for customers seeking understated luxury.

Vehicle price

Mercedes-Benz S 450 d 4MATIC 15.75 million yen

Audi A8 55 TFSI quattro 12.45 million yen
