Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid

A unique Porsche-like four-door style

Let’s compare the BMW M5 and Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid sports sedans, both of which have been updated with new models. They are both electric vehicles in a similar price range. While they share the commonality of being German sports sedans equipped with the latest plug-in hybrid technology, their characters are quite different.

The M5 is 43mm longer, 33mm wider, and 87mm taller than the Panamera, but the difference lies more in their appearance than in their size. While the M5 has the appearance of a typical four-door sedan with a separate trunk, the Panamera has the unique Porsche form that has been passed down since the first generation, like a four-door “911.”

BMW M5

Body size = Length 5095mm x Width 1970mm x Height 1510mm

Wheelbase = 3005mm

Vehicle weight = 2400kg

Tire size = 285/40R20 (front), 295/35R21 (rear)

Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid

Body size = Length 5052mm x Width 1937mm x Height 1423mm

Wheelbase = 2950mm

Vehicle weight = 2330kg

Tire size = 265/45ZR19 (front), 295/40ZR19 (rear)

The M5 overwhelms the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid with power

Both the M5 and the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid are equipped with plug-in hybrid powertrains. The M5, based on a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline turbo, outperforms the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid, which combines a 3.0-liter flat-six twin-turbo with a motor, in terms of maximum output and torque. The Panamera 4S E-Hybrid is outdone by 183 PS in maximum output and 250 Nm in maximum torque. The M5 also wins in top speed and 0-100 km/h acceleration.

BMW M5

Engine type = V8 gasoline + motor

Displacement = 4394cc

Maximum output = 727PS / 6000rpm

Maximum torque = 1000Nm / 1800-5400rpm

Transmission = Electronically controlled 8-speed AT

Drive system = AWD

Top speed = 305km/h

0-100km/k acceleration = 3.5 seconds

Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid

Engine type = Horizontally opposed 6-cylinder twin turbo + motor

Displacement = 2894cc

Maximum output = 544PS

Maximum torque = 750Nm

Battery capacity = 25.9kWh

Transmission = 8-speed PDK

Drive system = AWD

Top speed = 290km/h

0-100km/k acceleration = 3.7 seconds

The irreplaceable charm of “Porsche”

As for the cockpit, both are equipped with the latest generation infotainment system. The M5 is equipped with the “BMW Curved Display,” a familiar feature in BMW’s latest models, which features two horizontal screens arranged side by side. The Panamera also comes equipped with the “Porsche Driver Experience” with a large display, but retains the Porsche-like meter nacelle, which is another point that gives it a “Porsche” feel.

The M5, taking advantage of its taller overall height, likely offers the advantage in rear seat comfort. The Panamera’s rear seats offer ample legroom and support, but the seating position is lower than that of the M5. While the price difference between the two cars is only about 1 million yen, the M5 significantly outperforms the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid in terms of driving performance. However, the M5 offers the irreplaceable appeal of a Porsche four-door sedan, and this may be enough reason to choose the Panamera.

By the way, the price will jump up significantly, but there is also the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which has a price tag of 33.25 million yen and specifications comparable to the M5 (maximum output 782 PS, maximum torque 1000 Nm).

Vehicle price

BMW M5 20.48 million yen

Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid 19.4 million yen

The third-generation Panamera was released in November last year. Initially, only the turbo was available as a plug-in hybrid, but the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and Panamera 4S E-Hybrid were later added. Both models have expanded their electric range to further improve efficiency, and the benefits of this have also been felt around the chassis!

We had the opportunity to test the new M5, which was just released in Japan, on the winding roads of Hakone. So, what was it like driving it?

“Even though it’s been converted into a PHV, the super sedan “M5” is still the real “M5″!” Test drive of the “BMW M5”

The new M5, boasting the strongest specs of all time, 727 PS/1000 Nm, has finally arrived. What kind of performance will the new M5, now a plug-in hybrid, deliver? We tested its true worth on the familiar winding roads of Hakone. (Reprinted and re-edited from the February 2025 issue of GENROQ)
