MERCEDES-BENZ GLS

Classic toughness or modern luxury?

The G-Class follows the iconic design of the Geländewagen, which has its roots in military vehicles. Its square body shape and ladder frame structure emphasize its robustness, and off-road details such as round headlights and a spare tire mounted on the back are characteristic of the G-Class. When you open the door, a heavy latch sound resonates, and just like the exterior, the car exudes a rugged feel even in its usability.

On the other hand, the interior of the latest model has been updated with the latest digital technology such as the digital cockpit and MBUX, while retaining the functional design that has been continued from the previous model, which emphasizes operability during off-road driving. Of course, the luxurious interior that combines nappa leather and wood panels continues to be adopted.

The GLS-Class, on the other hand, features a design befitting a modern luxury SUV. Its exterior, with its elegant body lines composed of curved surfaces, exudes the presence of a flagship SUV. The LED headlights and chrome-finished front grille also create a sense of luxury, resulting in a sophisticated styling that stands out in urban landscapes.

The interior is designed to elegantly combine SUV-like qualities with a luxurious feel, and in addition to being equipped with the latest MBUX, the controls are easy to operate. The spacious three-row cabin is also a major feature of the GLS-Class, and a “Chauffeur Package” option is also available, which adds reclining and massage functions to the rear seats.

While the G-Class interior emphasizes “functional luxury with a respect for tradition,” the GLS-Class is designed as a luxurious space centered on “comfort and advanced technology.”

Torquey diesel or powerful V8 petrol?

The G 450 d is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel turbo engine that produces 750Nm of torque from extremely low rpm. Another major highlight is the addition of a new 48V mild hybrid system. This powerful torque and full-time 4WD system are put to good use when driving off-road, and combined with the high ground clearance of 230mm, it allows for stable driving even on steep slopes and in muddy conditions. By simply switching to low-range gear and activating the differential lock with the flip of a switch, the car’s off-road performance is further enhanced.

Meanwhile, the GLS 580 combines a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo gasoline engine with a 48V mild hybrid system, producing a maximum output of 517 PS and a maximum torque of 730 Nm. With the addition of acceleration assistance from the motor, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, delivering performance unimaginable for a large SUV.

In terms of fuel economy, the G-Class, which is equipped with a diesel engine that generates high torque at low revolutions and a mild hybrid system, is superior at all speeds.

Although the GLS class is equipped with a high-output V8 engine, its fuel economy is not particularly good. However, thanks to the motor assist, fuel consumption during city driving is certainly kept down. Considering the engine specifications, the fuel economy is quite satisfactory.

Five-seater off-roaders and seven-seater luxury SUVs have different tastes

The G 450 d is set as the entry-level model of the G-Class, but it is still an expensive car. The combination of outstanding off-road performance and a luxurious interior befitting an expensive car has a unique appeal, making the G-Class a popular model with a unique presence in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Its high durability means it can be used for a long time, and its value is also resistant to depreciation, making it a valuable investment.

The GLS-Class, on the other hand, is priced as a high-end luxury SUV, and is even more expensive than the G-Class. However, it is packed with comfort and the latest technology that justifies its price, and its rear seat comfort and equipment are unmatched by its rivals. It can be a strong choice for drivers and families who want to travel long distances in comfort with multiple people.

If comfort during travel is your number one priority, you should choose the GLS class, and if you want off-road performance, the G class is your only choice. However, it’s unlikely that anyone will drive the latest G class on rough roads. The deciding factor in choosing one will likely be the difference in passenger capacity and preference for interior and exterior design.

Vehicle price

The appearance remains almost unchanged, but the shape of the air intake has been changed and a new lip spoiler has been adopted.

“The new model is sure to be a huge hit!” The shocking evolution of the “Mercedes-AMG G 63” is confirmed after riding it.

The G-Class has maintained its unique and unchanging styling since its launch in 1979. This popular model, which is considered “super” even in Japan, has finally undergone a major evolution. In addition to improvements in aerodynamics and quietness, driving performance has also been significantly improved. (Reprinted and re-edited from the November 2024 issue of GENROQ)
