Contrasting characteristics of rear-engine and mid-engine

Porsche will introduce the 992.2, an updated version of the 992, in 2024. While the GTS, finally equipped with the electrified T-Hybrid, tends to attract attention, the base model 911 Carrera, equipped with a 3.0-liter turbo flat-six engine, has also matured, allowing you to fully enjoy the driving feel that is characteristic of Porsche.

In 2021, Lotus announced the Emira, a mid-engine sports car that will replace the Elise, Exige, and Evora. It features a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo and a 3.5-liter V6 supercharged engine mounted in the rear mid-mounted position, and is billed as the last Lotus model (for now) to be powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE).

The 911 Carrera has evolved with the times, but continues to use the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive (RR) design that dates back to the original 901. The latest 992.2 model is modern, yet instantly recognizable as a Porsche. In terms of body size, the 911 Carrera is 131mm longer in overall length, but its wheelbase and overall width are larger than the Elise. The side view in particular should help you understand the difference in personality between the RR and mid-engine designs.

Competitive engine power and torque

The 911 Carrera is equipped with a 3.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder turbo engine in the rear engine bay, producing a maximum output of 394 PS and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. The Emira V6, which also uses the same six-cylinder engine, is equipped with a Toyota-made 3.5-liter V6 supercharger, boasting a maximum output of 405 PS and a maximum torque of 430 Nm. The 911 Carrera surpasses the Emira in both top speed and 0-100 km/h acceleration.

The powerful appeal of the “boxer engine”

The historic 911 Carrera cockpit features a 12.65-inch meter panel behind the steering wheel and a 10.9-inch touchscreen display in the center of the instrument panel. The Emira combines a 12.3-inch meter screen with a 10.25-inch center screen. This represents a significant improvement in quality over the racing-car-like Elise and Exige.

While many sports cars have adopted all-wheel drive, hybrid systems, and advanced driving assistance features, the 911 Carrera and Emira have become rare ICE (internal combustion engine) sports cars. In addition to the price difference of 2.8 million yen, the Emira has an advantage that cannot be ignored as a sports car: it is over 100 kg lighter. However, the 911 Carrera allows you to experience the charm that only a Porsche can offer: you can feel the Porsche boxer six from behind.

Porsche 911 Carrera: 18.53 million yen

Lotus Emira V6 FIRST EDITION: 15.73 million yen
