The Junior lineup includes the fully electric “Electrica” and the 48V mild hybrid “Hybrida.” This time, the hybrid Hybrida will be joined by the all-wheel drive model “Q4” with high off-road capabilities.

Alfa Romeo’s compact crossover “Junior” will be joined by the long-awaited “Hybrida Q4” mild hybrid and all-wheel drive (AWD) model. The Stellantis 48V hybrid system combines a 1.2-liter inline 3-cylinder turbo engine with two electric motors, enabling motor-driven AWD.

Alfa Romeo recently held a large-scale snow driving test event for the Junior, open to the international media. The Junior is currently sold in 38 countries, and in just a few months since its release, it has recorded over 27,000 orders worldwide. Incidentally, the fully electric “Electrica” model accounts for a large proportion of the total, at 19%.

Although the Junior Hybrida Q4 is an AWD vehicle, it does not have a physical drive shaft between the front and rear axles. This significantly reduces the vehicle’s weight compared to conventional AWD vehicles, thereby reducing gasoline consumption and CO2 emissions. The vehicle also features a “Power Looping Technology System” that allows for efficient driving even when the battery is low.

The junior Q4 model is the first to feature a multi-link independent rear suspension on Stellantis’ modular platform, eCMP. It combines comfort in everyday driving with high driving pleasure, and during the test drive event it demonstrated excellent traction performance in all conditions, including snowy, muddy, and wet roads.

All-wheel drive that combines efficiency and driving performance

The Junior Hybrida Q4 adds an electric motor to the rear axle of the base Hybrida, and the all-wheel drive system, which does not have a drive shaft, achieves both efficiency and driving performance.

The Junior Hybrida Q4 is an AWD model that combines a 1.2-liter inline 3-cylinder turbo engine that produces a maximum output of 137 PS with two 21kW electric motors. In addition to the electric motor on the front axle built into the 6-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission), the Hybrida Q4 is also equipped with a second electric motor on the rear axle. It is said that high traction performance is ensured without connecting the front and rear axles with a physical drive shaft.

This ideal layout ensures optimal torque distribution, ensuring excellent traction in all driving conditions, including urban and gravel roads. The rear motor is also equipped with a dedicated gearbox that boosts torque to the rear wheels, providing maximum stability.

The Junior Hybrida Q4 also features the Alfa Romeo DNA selector, which allows the driver to tailor the vehicle’s characteristics to suit the situation. “Dynamic” offers maximum power without sacrificing fuel economy, while “Natural” is suitable for everyday use. “Advanced Efficiency” optimizes fuel consumption and provides a smooth ride. “Q4” is designed for low-grip conditions, distributing torque between the front and rear axles for maximum control.

Exclusive exterior features include “Leggenda” badges, full LED headlights, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. The interior comes standard with a leather steering wheel, heated Spiga seats with a combination of synthetic leather and fabric, a 10.25-inch infotainment system with navigation, a six-speaker sound system, and a hands-free power tailgate.

The Alfa Romeo Junior is the de facto successor to the Giulietta. It is a highly anticipated model from Alfa, with both BEV and mild hybrid versions available.

Test drive of the powerful compact Alfa Romeo Junior raises expectations: “Will this signal the revival of the prestigious brand?”

Alfa Romeo has released a long-awaited compact model. The lineup includes two types: BEV and hybrid. We test drove the high-powered BEV version, the 280 Veloce, in Italy. (Reprinted and re-edited from the September 2024 issue of GENROQ)
