First ever MLB tournament held at a racing circuit
A baseball field was set up in the infield of Bristol Motor Speedway, and the Speedway Classic, the first-ever baseball event played on a circuit, was held from August 2nd to 3rd.
For the first time in history, Major League Baseball (MLB) built a baseball stadium inside the Bristol Motor Speedway, an oval track in Tennessee. A collaboration between motorsports and baseball, the “Speedway Classic,” was held. The game between the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds on August 3rd was suspended due to heavy rain, but resumed the following day, August 4th. The Braves won 4-2.
The game was watched from the stands on the track, with an attendance of 91,032. This was the first MLB regular season game to be held in Tennessee, and it set a new record for the largest attendance in MLB history. However, there were complaints from spectators, as the baseball field was quite far from the oval circuit’s spectator seats.
Chevrolet, the official vehicle provider of MLB, made its presence felt at the Bristol Motor Speedway, the venue for the game. After a home run was hit, a Corvette paraded around the oval. Various Chevrolet-themed events were also held in the Fan Zone within the Speedway Classic.
He converted a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle into a pitching machine, creating the world’s only V8 pitching machine, the “Chevy Slinger.” Boasting a ball speed of approximately 160 km/h, the Chevy Slinger is the fastest pitching machine in history, and was even used in a duel by former MLB player Yonder Alonso.
A new Chevrolet mascot, “Mash,” was created, combining elements of baseball, racing, and Chevrolet. He greeted many children at the venue. Limited-edition Speedway Classic T-shirts and caps were also sold as merchandise in collaboration with Chevrolet and MLB.
