Taking advantage of speed to help with organ transport missions

In 2014, the Italian National Police was provided with the Huracan LP 610-4 as a police car to replace the Gallardo. Taking advantage of its speed, the car was used to transport organs again in 2023.

Over the course of 20 years, Lamborghini has provided the Italian National Police with six high-performance models as valuable tools for patrols and emergency medical response services. These high-speed Lamborghini police cars have performed more than 200 emergency organ evacuation missions across Italy, making a significant contribution to saving lives. They have also participated in more than 1,500 road safety education events to promote safe driving.

The six vehicles have been in service as police cars for the Italian National Police for over 20 years. Each vehicle is equipped with specialized equipment to support security and emergency operations. Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann commented on the 20th anniversary of the partnership with the Italian National Police:

“We are extremely proud to celebrate 20 years of cooperation with the Italian National Police. We have the utmost respect for the work they do every day to ensure the safety of the Italian people. It is a great pleasure to see our vehicles supporting the police’s road operations and helping to save lives.”

Interior Minister Vittorio Pisani once again expressed his gratitude to Lamborghini.

“Our 20-year collaboration with Automobili Lamborghini has greatly assisted the Italian National Police in carrying out delicate tasks such as emergency organ evacuation, contributing to one of the police’s missions: serving all citizens. With Lamborghinis in use, from Gallardo to the latest Urus, we have access to cutting-edge equipment and technology. Our specially trained drivers, thanks to Lamborghini police cars, are able to carry out this important mission quickly and safely.”

Three Gallardo Police Cars were introduced

Following the launch of the first police car based on the Gallardo 510-4 in 2004, a total of three Gallardos are now in service across Italy.

In 2004, Lamborghini delivered the first Gallardo 510-4 to the Italian National Police, which put it into service as an organ transport vehicle in September of that year. The Gallardo 510-4 was the first production Lamborghini to feature an advanced 5.0-liter V10 engine with variable valve timing.

The Gallardo 510-4 is equipped with a traffic monitoring device that can identify license plates and transmit images in real time to the operations center when dangerous driving behavior is detected. The first vehicle was assigned to the Stradale unit in Rome, where it patrolled the central and southern regions and provided emergency medical support. It has traveled approximately 140,000 km and completed its four-year mission.

In 2005, a second Gallardo 510-4 was delivered to the National Police of the Bologna region. It was equipped similarly to the first car for road safety surveillance, but also had an additional refrigerated compartment in the trunk for emergency organ transport.

In 2008, the Gallardo LP560-4 was announced as the successor to the first-generation Gallardo, boasting outstanding performance and advanced technology. Boasting a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 325km/h, the Gallardo LP560-4 is deployed in central and southern Italy, primarily used for organ transport between Salerno and Reggio Calabria. The front trunk is equipped with a refrigerator and defibrillator for rapid organ transport, contributing to life-saving efforts.

In addition to its daily duties, the Gallardo also takes part in numerous iconic events, such as Rome’s traditional Police Day parade, and serves as an escort car at historic car events such as the Targa Florio and the Milan-San Remo Rally.

The “Huracan Police Car” is still in use today

In 2014, Lamborghini provided the Italian National Police with the Huracan LP 610-4. The second vehicle was delivered in 2017. The Huracan LP 610-4 is equipped with a 5.2-liter V10 engine that produces a maximum output of 610 PS, with specifications of 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h. Blue LEDs have been installed at the bottom of the headlights to increase visibility, and white LEDs are also installed on the front, rear, and sides of the aluminum casing.

Most recently, in February 2023, a Huracán assigned to the Emilia-Romagna Traffic Police was used to transport a vital organ: a kidney was retrieved from San Salvatore Hospital in L’Aquila and transported to Le Molinetto Hospital in Turin. The organ was delivered to the recipient in good time, saving the life of a 57-year-old woman.

The latest Urus will be introduced in December 2023

In addition to the two Huracans still in use, the Urus Performante, equipped with many of the latest features, will be introduced at the end of 2023.

In addition to the two Huracans still in use, the Urus Performante, equipped with many of the latest features, will be introduced at the end of 2023.

In December 2023, a ceremony to present the keys to the Urus Performante Police Car to Interior Minister Matteo Piante-Dosi was held in Piazza Viminale in Rome, in the presence of Lamborghini Chairman and CEO Winkelmann and Interior Minister Pisani.

The Urus Performante is equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine that produces a maximum output of 666 PS. Despite being an SUV model, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 306 km/h. The livery was designed by Lamborghini’s design department, Centro Stile. It combines the classic blue and white of the Italian National Police, and the roof is fitted with a blue light bar with 360° LED lights and a two-tone electric siren.

The cockpit is equipped with a number of essential police equipment, including a heavily reinforced weapons box. The trunk also has a dedicated compartment for storing service equipment and a defibrillator for emergency response. The organ refrigerator’s temperature can be constantly monitored using an on-board display and data logger.
