The MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) was launched in 2024 as the top performance model in the new generation MINI series. The name comes from the famous Mini tuner John Cooper, and the lineup includes a three-door hatchback (ICE/BEV), a convertible, the crossover Countryman, and the BEV-only Aceman. The three-door hatchback MINI JCW is the core model of the series, equipped with a specially tuned 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine.
The Volkswagen Polo GTI is a sports hatchback that follows the Golf GTI, with the first model debuting in 1998. The current sixth-generation Polo was released in 2017, and an improved new model with updated interior and exterior was released in 2022. In 2024, the Polo GTI’s 25th anniversary model, the Edition 25, will also be introduced to the Japanese market.
The Polo GTI is 210mm longer than the MINI JCW, with a wheelbase 55mm longer. The Polo GTI offers the advantages of rear passenger space and ample luggage space, as well as the convenience of a five-door.

The interior of the new generation MINI, including the JCW, will feature a large 240mm diameter circular OLED center display in the center, combined with a dashboard made of new materials. The Polo GTI will have a revamped interior in its 2022 minor change, introducing the latest 10.25-inch “Digital Cockpit Pro.” Compared to the simple and innovative interior of the MINI, the Polo GTI’s interior is conservative, but it offers an easy-to-use interior with the high quality that is typical of Volkswagen.
The Polo, which has been highly popular in the fiercely competitive B-segment where domestic and imported cars compete, has many of the merits sought in a compact car, such as ample living space and easy maneuverability, even in the sports model GTI.In contrast, the MINI JCW has its own appealing points, such as its exterior and “go-kart feeling.”
The price difference of about 760,000 yen is not small, but if you like the presence and unique interior and exterior of the MINI JCW, there is no need to hesitate. For customers who want a car that can serve as a family’s transportation while also enjoying a little sporty driving on the weekends, the versatile Polo GTI is the best choice.
