BMW X3

Three grades introduced in Japan

The X3, which debuted as a sports activity vehicle (SAV) in 2003, has undergone its first full model change in seven years and is now in its fourth generation. It is billed as a premium mid-size SAV that is “clean,” “modern,” and “powerful.”

Three grades have been introduced to Japan this time: two gasoline models and one diesel model. The X3 20 xDrive xLine is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder gasoline turbo that produces a maximum output of 190 PS (140 kW) and a maximum torque of 310 Nm. The X3 20d xDrive M Sport is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder diesel turbo that produces a maximum output of 197 PS (145 kW) and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. The X3 M50 xDrive M Performance model is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-six twin-turbo that produces a maximum output of 381 PS (280 kW) and a maximum torque of 540 Nm. All vehicles are equipped with a 48V system and an 8-speed automatic transmission, driving all four wheels.

The X3 M50 xDrive M Performance model is the only one that combines a motor built into the transmission instead of a belt drive, boasting a maximum system output of 398 PS (293 kW) and a maximum system torque of 580 Nm. The PHEV version equipped with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo, which is being introduced in Europe, was not introduced this time.

Striking Iconic Glow

The new exterior, which incorporates BMW’s latest design language and is said to be more elegant and sophisticated than before, has achieved a massive form reminiscent of a single mass. Design elements have been deliberately stripped away, leaving an impression with simple lines on the generously proportioned surfaces. The body size is low and wide, at 4755mm in length (25mm longer than the previous model), 1920mm in width (30mm wider), and 1660mm in height (-15mm). It also has excellent aerodynamics, with a Cd value of 0.27 (previous model = 0.29).

At the center of the front section is the BMW kidney grille, which has a strong presence. It adopts the “BMW Iconic Glow” design, which features continuous lines around each element of the grille. Like the 1 Series recently announced, the grille features a bar design arranged vertically and diagonally. It is also equipped with twin circular headlights, which are a modern interpretation of the traditional four-lamp headlamp.

Clean interior

The modern, minimalist interior balances the SAV’s functionality with ample cabin space and unique details to create a premium atmosphere. BMW’s latest design features include a curved display, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a new gear selector lever.

The latest OS9 infotainment system, iDrive, has been updated with a significant digital upgrade. Luggage space has been expanded from 570L (20L more than the previous model) to a maximum of 1700L (100L more than the previous model) by folding down the rear seats.

It will be produced at the Spartanburg plant in the US and the Rosslyn plant in South Africa, and shipped to Japan from the Spartanburg plant. Deliveries to Japan are scheduled to begin in December.

The X3, which is popular in Japan, has finally switched to its fourth generation. I was also impressed by the performance of this new car.

Test drive of BMW’s “best-selling” new “BMW X3” – “The new model is guaranteed to be a hit”

BMW’s new mid-size SUV, the X3, which is popular in Japan, has switched to its fourth generation. The new model, which uses many motifs from the Neue Klasse X concept model, is very design-conscious. We will introduce the appeal of the top-grade M50. (Reprinted and reorganized from the December 2024 issue of GENROQ)
