Stellantis has unveiled the STLA Frame, a multi-energy platform designed for full-size pickup trucks, SUVs and commercial vehicles, key segments in North America and select global markets.

Full-size truck and SUV owners tend to prioritize practicality and performance along with high power and durability. The STLA frame boasts class-leading ranges of up to 690 miles (approximately 1,100 km) for Range Extended Electric Vehicles (REEVs) and up to 500 miles (approximately 800 km) for BEVs. It’s also engineered to achieve a maximum towing capacity of 14,000 pounds (approximately 6,350 kg) and a payload capacity of 2,700 pounds (approximately 1,224 kg).

The STLA frame, which will serve as the base for full-size pickup trucks, light commercial vehicles, and SUVs developed by Stellantis’ brands, will initially debut as a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended range electric vehicle (REEV) with electric powertrains. Subsequently, the STLA frame will be introduced with ICE, hybrid, and hydrogen powertrain versions.

The introduction of a REEV system, which combines a battery, a fully electric module (EDM) for the front and rear axles, an on-board generator, and an internal combustion engine, makes it possible to transport and tow heavy loads over long distances without sacrificing range. The generator supplies power to the EDM to propel the vehicle and recharge the battery as needed, ensuring sufficient range even under heavy loads.

Flexibility and redundancy for large batteries

The STLA frame incorporates a Range Extender EV (REEV) that is equipped with an internal combustion engine and generator to drive a motor, enabling large pickups to have a high payload and driving range.

The STLA frame allows for a large battery to be installed in the frame center, which will enable the BEV version to achieve a maximum range of 800 km. Redundancy is also built in to accommodate future battery technological innovations.

The STLA frame utilizes advanced high-tensile steel for improved durability and rigidity while minimizing weight. A wide center section houses the battery pack, and reinforced frame rails protect it in the event of a side impact. An enlarged belly pan reduces drag and contributes to maximizing range.

As mentioned above, the BEV is designed to have a maximum range of 800km, while the REEV is designed for a range of 1,100km. It is equipped with a liquid-cooled battery pack with an energy capacity of 159 to 200kWh, and is equipped with redundancy in consideration of the evolution of battery technology. Stellantis is considering using this platform for the long term.

Stellantis’ proprietary EDM fully electric module, with a maximum output of 250 kW, is mounted on the front and rear axles, ensuring acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. Various suspension options, including air suspension, can be combined to provide an optimized ride for vehicles ranging from tough pickup trucks to practical commercial vans and even luxury SUVs.

The STLA frame is compatible with a variety of fast-charging devices. The BEV version can be quickly charged with a maximum of 350kW, 800V DC, providing a range of 100 miles (160km) in just 10 minutes. The REEV version can be quickly charged with a maximum of 175kW, 400V DC, providing a range of up to 50 miles (80km) in 10 minutes. The frame also features bidirectional charging, allowing the vehicle’s battery to be used to charge another EV or to provide power to a home in an emergency.
