BMW M Performance Parts are developed and manufactured by BMW M GmbH, BMW’s high-performance division. But what exactly is their appeal? Masataka Yanagida, who competed in the Super GT GT300 class with BMW M Team Studie x CRS in 2023, and Sara Nakayama, BMW Aftersales Brand Navigator, took a test drive in an M2 Coupe fully equipped with M Performance Parts to find out for themselves.

Yanagida: It’s a really good car. What’s impressive is how well the front corners. Oftentimes, cars like that have unstable rears, but this one is solid and has good traction.

I knew that the Nakayama M2 Coupe was a car that could be driven both around town and on the circuit, but this really made sense to me. In normal mode, it feels like you can drive it normally around town, but when you switch to track mode, the sound and realism make you feel like you’re on a circuit, which was exciting!

Genuine optional parts

Yanagida: Personally, I want to drive a sports car comfortably on a daily basis. I don’t want it to become difficult to drive just to make it faster. In that sense, I think the target of BMW M Performance Parts is excellent.

Nakayama : So, do you think you’ll be able to race on the circuit in this condition?

Yanagida : Of course! It’s good enough as it is. I think it’ll be a lot of fun to take it to the circuit as is. I think the aero parts will be even more effective at higher speeds. The rear wing alone will cause a lot of underwing, so it’s no wonder that instructions have been given from the home country to always install a front spoiler as well.

Nakayama: BMW M builds these cars through wind tunnel experiments and tests with works drivers, just like they do with racing cars.

Yanagida : As you’d expect from a genuine manufacturer option part. It has solid functionality, high quality, and a classy look that dresses up the bike without compromising the original design. And yet it doesn’t spoil the everyday use of the bike. It’s naturally great on mountain roads, but it’s also sporty and comfortable to use in the city. The road clearance has been taken into consideration, so you don’t have to worry about it. It’s really well made.

Speed-synced sound

Nakayama: I also thought the rear wing and other eye-catching designs were cool. Just having it parked there makes people want to take pictures. The muffler is also cool!

Yanagida : That’s amazing too. It’s made of titanium and is 8kg lighter.

When I was driving at about 100km/h on the Nakayama Expressway, the sound and speed were synchronized, which felt great. It felt like only the sound and speed were outstanding.

Yanagida: I guess you could say it’s the pleasant sound that comes with the rotation of the engine.

Nakayama: It has a deep sound. It’s loud but not unpleasant.

Center lock wheels are amazing

Yanagida : Also, from the driver’s perspective, the steering switches have a good feel, and the visibility and operability of the shift indicator and head-up display are also good. It’s not just about looks, it’s also about substance.

Nakayama’s passenger seat was also well supported by the optional M Carbon Bucket Seat, so he was able to enjoy Yanagida’s driving with peace of mind (laughs).

Yanagida: The great thing about the M2 Coupe with BMW M Performance Parts is that anyone can experience that. It’s overflowing with the attention to detail and seriousness that only a genuine manufacturer can offer. Even just looking at the carbon fiber parts, they’re made with great care and high quality. Another great thing is the center lock wheels. I’d definitely get them!

Nakayama : In 2024, we traveled around the country in a caravan to dealers, and two owners who saw the actual car placed orders.

Yanagida: I think it’s much more convincing when you see it in person. I’d like everyone to see it at the Auto Salon first!
