BMW M8 COMPETITION COUPÉ

Can the whole family go out together?

We compare the Mercedes-AMG flagship sports car, the GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupe, with the BMW M M8 Competition Coupe. The M8 is 30 kg lighter, but the body size of the M8 is 140 mm longer in length and 125 mm longer in wheelbase, making the AMG GT more compact in all respects except for its overall width. However, there is a crucial reason for this.

The M8 seats four, while the AMG GT seats two (an additional two seats are available as an option). This difference is also clearly reflected in the wheelbase. Even though they are both GT coupes, the AMG GT places more emphasis on driving performance, while the M8 is designed with daily use in mind.

For those with families, a four-seater car might be easier to convince your wife to buy one, since it can accommodate children. The AMG GT might require compromise in that respect.

Reasonable power considering the model’s characteristics and capacity

Although both cars are equipped with the same V8 engine, the M8 has a larger displacement and more power. However, I suspect that the power increase was not simply to beat its rivals. The M8 is a four-seater coupe. Even with a full load, these specs should allow the rear seat passengers to enjoy the M8’s charm. In that sense, the M8 has a truly enthusiastic package.

The AMG GT, on the other hand, is a coupe that is purely focused on sporty performance. In fact, it is almost impossible to fully utilize over 500 PS of power on public roads, so there is no real difference between the two.

Is 2 million yen not a big difference?

The price figures are also interesting. The four-seater, high-powered M8 is about 2 million yen cheaper than the AMG GT. When comparing driving performance and functionality, it seems the M8 offers better value.

However, considering that AMG is packed with the latest technology, such as the AMG Active Ride Control suspension, the price of 27.5 million yen is understandable. In fact, a difference of 2 million yen on a 30 million yen purchase is not a big deal.

Vehicle price

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupe: 27.5 million yen

BMW M8 Competition Coupe: 25.26 million yen

A test drive comparing the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 with the Porsche 911 and BMW M8

We took the new AMG GT 63 Coupe, which has just been introduced in Japan, on a public road for a test drive comparing it with its rivals. How has its character changed since it shares basic components with the SL? And what value is there in the significant price increase? We took a look at these two sports cars, both of which were born on the Autobahn, and found out. (Reprinted and re-edited from the August 2024 issue of GENROQ)
