VOLVO EX30

Both cars have designs that embody Volvo’s characteristic simplicity and robustness

The EX40 and EX30 are both Volvo cars, and because they are both SUVs, the body designs of the two cars are very similar. They also follow the straight-line styling typical of Volvo SUVs.

What is unique about this EV is its front fascia. Since it does not have an engine, there is no need to open up the grille. Strictly speaking, there is no need to stand up the front fascia, but it can be assumed that this styling was the result of following the front fascia of the Volvo family.

Comparing the body sizes of the two cars numerically, the EX40 is of course larger than the EX30. However, it is not dramatically larger. In particular, the wheelbase is almost the same. There is also not much difference in the interior space.

The EX40 also has the option of dual-motor AWD.

The powertrains of both cars share many similarities, including the fact that they both use a lithium-ion battery as the core to drive the rear wheel motor. What’s interesting is that the maximum motor output is higher in the EX30. There’s a reason for this. The EX30 remains rear-wheel drive, meaning this is the maximum output for the model, but the EX40 has a dual-motor AWD option in its lineup.

In the case of the EX40 AWD, the motor on the rear wheels is more powerful, and a motor is also installed on the front wheels. As a whole, the system produces more power than the EX30. In a simple comparison, the EX40 appears to be less powerful, but when you realize that it is a cheaper grade, the difference becomes understandable.

If you are looking for a single motor, you might consider the EX30.

The price difference between the two cars is over 1 million yen. The EX40 is the more expensive model, so it’s only natural, but considering the difference in specs, the EX40 feels a bit overpriced. The cruising range is also not that different, with the EX30 having a 560km range and the EX40 having a 590km range (WLTC mode).

If you are choosing a cheaper grade of the EX40, you might want to consider the EX30.

Vehicle price

Volvo EX40 Plus Single Motor: 6.79 million yen

Volvo EX30 Ultra Single Motor Extended Range: 5.59 million yen

The exterior is impressive, with a front shield design unique to EVs and Thor's Hammer lights that assert Volvo's identity.

The popular “EX30” fully electric compact SUV, which evokes a new generation of Volvo, is due to its moderate size and high quality.

The third model in Volvo’s BEV lineup is the EX30. Its compact size, perfectly suited to Japanese roads and parking conditions, has made it extremely popular not only in Japan but also around the world. We took a ride in this all-electric compact SUV in Barcelona, Spain.
