In 2025, Audi plans to expand its plug-in hybrid models and has decided to introduce a new PHEV technology name, “e-hybrid.”

The A5 Sedan and A5 Avant were developed based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) as the successor ICE (internal combustion engine) models to the A4 series, which has been the backbone of Audi. This will be the first time that a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model has been added to the A5 series.

The new generation HV battery installed has a capacity that is approximately 45% higher than that of the conventional PHEV model. Furthermore, thanks to improved regenerative braking performance, the EV mode range is said to reach a maximum of 110km. This time, in order to increase awareness of the PHEV model, a new technology name “e-hybrid” has been introduced.

Jeffrey Buco, AUDI AG’s Board Member for Technical Development, explained the e-hybrid added to the A5 as follows:

“The plug-in hybrid model introduced in the new A5 has an extended EV mode driving range, allowing the majority of daily journeys to be driven electrically. Our hybrid technology combines the advantages of both ICE and BEV, providing greater flexibility in everyday life. In addition, the new technology name ‘e-hybrid’ makes it instantly recognizable as a PHEV model.”

Gernot Dörner, CEO of Audi AG, added:

“In 2025, we plan to significantly expand our plug-in hybrid range across all our models. The new generation plug-in hybrid e-hybrid model, with a maximum output of 367 PS, will offer our customers a sporty and comfortable driving experience, performance and outstanding efficiency.”

Two output levels available

The A5 plug-in hybrid model is equipped with a newly developed hybrid battery in the rear and is available in two power output levels: 220kW (299PS) and 270kW (367PS).

The new A5 Sedan e-hybrid quattro and A5 Avant e-hybrid quattro are available in two power output levels: 220 kW (299 PS) and 270 kW (367 PS). The 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder TFSI gasoline turbo engine, which produces 185 kW (252 PS) on its own, is paired with an electric motor that produces a maximum of 105 kW. The 270 kW version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, while the 220 kW version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. Top speed for both models is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The heart of the latest plug-in hybrid system, the e-hybrid, is a newly developed HV (high-voltage) battery located in the rear section of the vehicle. Compared to the previous PHEV model, battery capacity has been increased by approximately 45% to 25.9 kWh (net 20.7 kWh). Maximum AC charging output has been increased to 11 kW, shortening the charging time from 0% to 100% to just 2.5 hours.

The performance of the regenerative braking system has also been significantly improved. Drivers can now adjust the regeneration level in EV mode using paddles on the steering wheel. Drive modes include “EV mode” and “Hybrid mode.” When EV mode is selected, the car will make full use of the battery charge to reach its destination and run on electric power for as long as possible. The maximum range in EV mode is 110km, which is said to cover most driving ranges in urban areas.

Audi Japan has announced the launch of its premium mid-size model series, the A5 and A5 Avant. The A5 series was developed as a new model series to succeed the best-selling A4, and is produced in Neckarsulm, Germany. Sales have now begun through authorized Audi dealers nationwide, and a global limited edition model, “edition one,” will also be released at the same time to commemorate the launch.
