Maybach uses the extended body for rear passenger space

The current seventh-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class debuted in 2020. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, which has a special body, has also undergone a full model change and went on sale in Japan in July 2021. The Maybach S-Class has an overall length that is 180 mm longer than the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class, and compared to the standard body S 450 d 4MATIC, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 is 290 mm longer in both length and wheelbase. All of this extra space has been used to increase the livability of the rear compartment.

The exterior is based on the S-Class, which has the dignified form of Mercedes-Benz’s flagship, and the Maybach S-Class lavishly incorporates glittering chrome parts. The front grille and rear apron are decorated with delicate vertical louvers, the Maybach emblem is placed in various places, and the exclusive two-tone paintwork fully expresses its luxury.

Both vehicles have sufficient power and torque in practical ranges

The S 450 d 4MATIC is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder clean diesel engine that is highly economical and produces a maximum output of 367 PS, while the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 is equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine that produces a maximum output of 503 PS. Both models are mild hybrids and feature an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).

In terms of maximum output, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580, which has a larger engine displacement, outperforms the S 450 d 4MATIC by 136 PS, but in terms of maximum torque, the S 450 d 4MATIC, which takes advantage of the characteristics of a diesel engine, has about 50 Nm more. Both have enough power and torque for practical use in city streets and on highways.

By the way, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is also available in a plug-in hybrid version based on a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine, the S 580 e 4MATIC, and a 6.0-liter V12 gasoline engine, the S 680 4MATIC, but currently only the 4.0-liter V8 gasoline turbo that is also installed in the S-Class is available in the Japanese market.

Luxurious rear seats that call themselves “first class”

The S-Class has plenty of space even with the standard body, but the rear cabin of the Mercedes-Maybach S 580, with its wheelbase extended by 290 mm, is impressively spacious. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is designed to be a “chauffeur-driven” vehicle, with the driver driving and the owner sitting in the rear seat, so it’s only natural that the emphasis on rear living space is emphasized.

While the basic cockpit layout, such as the front seat display and ventilation, is the same, each part has a distinct “Maybach” feel. The interior is a combination of the highest quality leather and wood, and can be customized to suit the owner’s desires.

An optional “First Class Package” is available for the rear seats. It includes separate seats with ottomans, a clean box with a champagne bottle cooler between the left and right seats, and a retractable table, allowing passengers to relax just like in first class on an airplane.

The price difference between the S 450 d 4MATIC and the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 is about 16 million yen. Although both cars are based on the same architecture, to justify the price tag, which is more than double, you might need to be in a position where you can travel without holding the steering wheel and just sit in the rear seat.
