Audi A4

From a 4-door sedan to a 5-door fastback

In 2024, Audi announced a reorganization of its naming system, with odd numbers representing electric models and even numbers representing internal combustion engine models, and the name “A5” was adopted for the D-segment saloon and wagon as the successor to the previous “A4.” However, this policy was reversed in 2025. There will no longer be any distinction between odd and even numbers for powertrains, and EV and ICE vehicles will be sold with the same combination of letters and numbers.

The A5, which was introduced before this policy, was developed as a successor to the A4, based on the new generation internal combustion engine platform “PPC (Premium Platform Combustion)”. It was slightly larger than the A4 (length +75mm, width +15mm, height +45mm), and the weight increased by 220kg, and the body shape was also changed from a four-door sedan with a separate trunk to a five-door fastback.

The exterior features a large single frame at the front, maintaining the Audi character, while the A5 incorporates Audi’s latest trends, such as combining a digital OLED and light bar at the rear.

Improved drivability due to increased torque

The “A5 TFSI 110kW” introduced in the Japanese market is equipped with the same 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder TFSI gasoline turbo as the “A4 35 TFSI advanced.” While maximum output remains the same at 150 PS, maximum torque has been increased to 280 Nm, improving drivability in urban areas. The all-wheel drive “quattro” system equipped model has a maximum output of 204 PS.

The newly developed 48V “MHEV plus” system is only available on the 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder TDI diesel turbo and the 3.0-liter V6 TFSI gasoline twin-turbo. At this time, there has been no announcement that MHEV plus will be introduced to the 2.0 inline 4 TFSI model.

Audi’s new generation cockpit update

The A5’s cockpit features Audi’s next-generation infotainment system, a significant evolution from the A4. It consists of an 11.9-inch “Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus” and a 14.5-inch “MMI touch display,” and a new 10.9-inch “MMI passenger display” can also be selected for the passenger seat.

As mentioned above, the A5 is a fastback with a large hatch gate. The trunk capacity is 476L, only a slight increase from the A4’s 460L, but the large opening will be useful for loading and unloading long items such as golf bags. Although the price has increased by more than 700,000 yen from the A4, you can fully feel the evolution once you get behind the wheel, with the adoption of the latest architecture and the introduction of a new generation cockpit.

Audi A5 Sedan × Mercedes-AMG C-Class Sedan

Comparing the specs of the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, both of which offer attractive prices and are well-equipped.

Audi’s mid-size saloon, the A5, has been introduced in Japan. The successor to the A4, equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE), is compared to the best-selling saloon in the same segment, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Let’s compare the specs of the A5 TFSI quattro 150kW and the C200 Sport to see what the differences are.
