We compare two European and American compact SUVs, the Cadillac XT4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLB. The XT4, which has been on sale since 2021, is the most compact model in Cadillac’s SUV lineup. While the body size is roughly the same as the GLB, the XT4 has significantly more rear seat space and is also superior in terms of cargo space when five people are on board.
On the other hand, the GLB’s strength is that it can accommodate up to seven people. Although there is a height restriction for passengers in the third row of seats of 168 cm or less, the fact that it can accommodate so many people is a major attraction. In addition, the square design, which is said to have been inspired by the G-Class, gives it a unique personality that is different from other Mercedes SUVs.
The XT4 is no less unique. The improved XT4’s interior and exterior designs have been revised to give it a more rugged look. In addition to the distinctive vertically designed LED headlights, the interior now features a 9K resolution 33-inch curved LCD monitor that combines the meter and information display, instantly elevating its sense of modernity.

The XT4 has better power performance

Mercedes-Benz GLB
The diesel engine installed in the GLB is inferior to the gasoline engine in the XT4 in terms of maximum torque, and the transmission is an 8-speed automatic, which is one gear less. Although the power performance is sufficient, the XT4 has better acceleration performance.
However, the GLB is also designed with off-road driving in mind, and when “Off-road mode” is selected, the drive force is distributed optimally according to road conditions while maintaining a 50:50 ratio, and the rough road driving assistance function shows the gradient and vehicle inclination on the display in real time. The XT4 also has multiple drive modes, including “Off-road mode,” but it can be said that its main purpose is on-road driving.

Two particularly unique imported SUVs

Cadillac XT4

Mercedes-Benz GLB
The vehicle price for the XT4 is 7.9 million yen, while the GLB is 6.97 million yen, making the XT4 more than 900,000 yen more expensive. However, the XT4 has a body size similar to the GLB, yet offers more rear seat space than the higher-ranking GLC. In addition, the XT4 is luxuriously equipped with genuine leather seats and electronically controlled dampers at this price.
The GLB can also add electronically controlled dampers by adding the “AMG Line Package” option, but the option price is about 600,000 yen, which significantly reduces the price difference.
The XT4 is a model that condenses Cadillac’s luxury into a compact body, while the GLB is a challenging model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup that focuses on practicality. Both are particularly unique among imported SUVs.
