LEXUS LX600

The simple and sturdy GX and the luxurious LX

In 2023, Lexus’ mid-size cross-country “GX” underwent a full model change for the first time in 24 years. In 2024, the “GX550 OVERTRAIL+” was introduced to the Japanese market through an advance lottery. Official sales of the “GX550” finally began on April 3, 2025. In contrast, the “LX” underwent a full model change to its fourth generation in 2021. The “LX600” featured in this article and the “LX700h” equipped with a hybrid powertrain are sold in the Japanese market.

The GX and LX were developed based on the same ladder frame, the GA-F. They share the same wheelbase of 2850mm, but the LX600, the top model in the Lexus lineup, is 140mm longer in overall length. Both feature the iconic Lexus “spindle grille,” but while the GX550 has a chic form that emphasizes functionality, the LX600 has a luxurious feel thanks to its chrome parts.

The LX600 outperforms the LX600 in power despite having the same 3.5-liter V6 engine.

Both models are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine. While maximum torque remains the same at 650 Nm, the LX600’s maximum output is 415 PS, 62 PS more than the GX550. The LX lineup also includes the LX700h, which combines a 3.5-liter V6 turbo with a hybrid system. Meanwhile, it has been announced that the GX will also be equipped with a hybrid version based on a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline turbo.

Practical luxury or a flagship luxury car?

The GX550 has a large 14-inch touch display in the center of the cockpit, giving it a more modern look. The LX600 has a 12.3-inch touch display for navigation and other functions, and a 7-inch touch display for other operations, giving it the feel of a cockpit from a previous era. Both models have three rows of seating, allowing for seven passengers.

Both models are developed based on Toyota’s ladder frame chassis, which is highly acclaimed worldwide, and it’s hard to say which is better when it comes to off-road performance. The price difference is 2 million yen, but if you’re looking for a practical, high-quality cross-country 4WD, the GX550 is the one for you. The LX is equipped with luxurious trim and seats worthy of its flagship name, and if you’re looking for a high-quality interior space, the LX600 is the one for you.
