LEXUS RX

Cadillac’s smallest SUV, compact yet spacious

We’ll compare Cadillac’s smallest SUV, the XT4, with Lexus’ flagship SUV, the RX. The RX is slightly larger than the XT4, which means it offers more rear seat space. However, despite being nearly 300mm longer than the XT4, there’s only a slight difference in rear seat knee room. The XT4’s greatest feature is its spacious rear seat space, even compared to competing models like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3.

The improved XT4 has been completely redesigned, with an exterior design that is extremely avant-garde yet unobtrusive. On the other hand, the RX has not undergone any major changes to its exterior, but all models now feature a 12.3-inch full LCD meter. It also continues to be equipped with convenient features such as the “e-Latch” that allows the doors to be opened and closed with a light touch, and an electric storage function that can be operated from the luggage compartment.

The biggest topic of the XT4’s improvements is undoubtedly the large 33-inch curved LCD monitor with 9K resolution that is installed in the instrument panel. This large display, which is also installed in Cadillac’s flagship model, the Escalade, is an impressive sight.

Lexus/Toyota hybrid systems are still strong

In terms of engine specifications alone, the turbocharged XT4 is superior, but the RX, equipped with a hybrid system, surpasses the XT4 in both total power and torque. The RX is equipped with a motor in the front that produces a maximum output of 182 PS and a maximum torque of 270 Nm, and the AWD model uses an E-Four system that adds a motor in the rear that produces 54 PS and 121 Nm.

The XT4’s twin-clutch AWD system is also an intricate system, but the RX’s motor-driven system offers superior response and smooth acceleration. The RX’s fuel economy is also excellent, at 18.7km/L, even with AWD.

Not only is the RX’s driving performance a strength, but its quietness is also a factor. In the February 2025 update, the RX’s driving force characteristics and chassis settings were optimized, and sound-absorbing materials were added to take advantage of the quietness of the hybrid system, and sound-insulating glass was also used in the rear doors, making it quieter than the previous model.

The RX wins in overall performance! The XT4 also has plenty of appeal.

The XT4 is available in only one grade, “SPORT,” priced at 7.9 million yen, while the “RX350h AWD” costs 8.11 million yen, with a price difference of just 200,000 yen.

Even at this price, the XT4 comes standard with electronically controlled dampers that work in conjunction with the drive mode, and although it’s expensive, it’s not bad value for money. However, the RX also comes standard with electronically controlled dampers. The RX’s latest upgrade also adds a rear-wheel steering mechanism, improving driving stability and reducing the minimum turning radius from 5.9m to 5.5m.

When evaluating the equipment and specifications comprehensively, the RX is undoubtedly the winner. However, the XT4 also has advantages such as a unique exterior design, a large 33-inch LCD monitor that envelops the driver, and a rear seat that is as spacious as the RX. It is certainly a car that is at least as attractive as the RX.
