The elegantly styled Corvette

The Porsche 911 GT3, based on the 992.2 type, has been given a sharper exterior design both front and rear, and the aerodynamics attached to various parts of the body have also been improved. The lineup includes the circuit-focused 911 GT3 with a rear wing, and the more practical 911 GT3 Touring Package.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06, which will be added to the eighth-generation Corvette in 2023, will have specifications that enhance the power unit and aerodynamics, with circuit racing in mind, just like the 911 GT3. The Corvette Z06’s body size is 115mm longer and 155mm wider, but 55mm lower, achieving a wide and relaxed form typical of a mid-engine sports car.

Equipped with the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine in American history

The 911 GT3’s 4.0-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine produces a maximum output of 510 PS and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. The Corvette Z06 is equipped with a 5.5-liter V8 DOHC “LT6” gasoline engine, boasting a maximum output of 646 PS and a maximum torque of 623 Nm. Chevrolet’s development goal for the “LT6” engine was to create “the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine in American history,” and it has achieved specifications that far surpass those of the 911 GT3.

Both cars had a top speed of over 300km/h, and while the acceleration performance was not the same, the Porsche had a 0-100km/h speed, while the Corvette had a 0-60mph (=97km/h) speed, the Corvette Z06 outperformed the 911 GT3. In addition, both models offer the linear acceleration that only a naturally aspirated engine without a turbocharger can provide.

American and German super sports cars with contrasting personalities

The cockpit atmosphere is in stark contrast. While the 911 GT3 has a calm interior space that evokes history, the Corvette Z06 has a flashy, American sports car feel with a strong personality. Both have an engine bay at the rear (the Corvette is mid-ship), so you can feel the engine pulsating from behind the seats.

The two cars actively incorporate feedback on the chassis, power unit, and aerodynamics from racing cars competing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and their characters, reflecting the different values of Germany and the United States, are starkly contrasting.

The Corvette Z06 is priced at a reasonable 2.88 million yen and boasts specs that surpass even the 911 GT3. The powerful brand power of “Porsche” is certainly appealing, but we can confidently say that it would be a shame to dismiss it as “American-made” without even trying it.
