GM has launched a global design project to produce three “Chevrolet Corvette Concepts” in 2025. The recently unveiled “California Corvette Concept” was created by GM’s Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena. It combines a design that foreshadows the futuristic Corvette with Southern California culture, reflecting GM’s deep ties to the state.

Brian Nesbitt, GM’s vice president of Global Design, had this to say about the California Corvette Concept:

“Today, GM Advanced Design is passionate about shaping the Corvette of the future, driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. The California Corvette Concept is another example of design that previews the future.”

“We asked several GM studios to create Corvette-inspired hypercars, the first of which was the Chevrolet Corvette Concept Car unveiled by our UK Design Center in March. Our California team has completed a design study that honors the Corvette’s legendary performance while blending it with their own unique vision.”

Single-piece canopy

The exterior is inspired by racing simulators and features a front-hinged single-piece canopy.

For decades, GM has leveraged the Corvette brand to unveil a series of concept cars, experimental vehicles and prototypes that push the boundaries of design and engineering. The California Corvette Concept pays homage to Corvette heritage while incorporating a touch of SoCal (Southern California) flair.

The California Corvette Concept is a one-off model with no production plans. GM’s Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena designed it from scratch, exploring various possibilities to push the boundaries of what the Corvette can be.

The exterior blends racing simulator styling with iconic Corvette design elements. Dramatic proportions and a cabin with a wide, tapered wheel area reflect classic Corvette DNA. The dramatic front-hinged single-piece canopy is a response to the super sports car of the future.

Driver-centric minimalist cockpit

The cockpit features an AR head-up display and a large display behind the steering wheel.

The minimalist interior is designed with the driver in mind, integrating the cockpit components with the performance display. The AR (Augmented Reality) head-up display supports the driver at high speeds by displaying the bare minimum of data.

Brian Smith, design director for GM’s Advanced Design Studio, added the following about the California Corvette Concept:

“Southern California has been a hub of automotive and design culture for a century, and GM has had a strong presence here for 40 years. We’re highlighting that this concept car was crafted through a Southern California lens, but it also has a global, forward-thinking outlook.”

“This duality is the basis of the California Corvette Concept’s design strategy. The design features a front-hinged, single-piece canopy. The entire upper shell can be removed, transforming the car from a sleek sports car into an open-air lightweight track car.”

“Is this the next generation Corvette?” The meaning behind the “Corvette Concept Car” unveiled by GM’s newly established UK Design Center

General Motors (GM) has opened a new design studio, the UK Design Centre, in Royal Leamington Spa, about 20 miles from Birmingham, England. To commemorate this, the company unveiled the Chevrolet Corvette Concept Car, an advanced design research vehicle created by the British design team.
