BMW X7

The X7 shines with “iconic glow”

The Range Rover Sport, a luxury cross-country vehicle second only to the Range Rover, evolved into its current third generation in 2022. This time, the Range Rover Sport S, equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo diesel engine, faces off against the BMW X7, the pinnacle of BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) series. Let’s compare it with the X7 xDrive 40d Excellence, which is equipped with the same 3.0-liter inline-six turbo diesel engine as the Range Rover Sport S.

The X7 is 210mm longer and 110mm longer in wheelbase. While the Range Rover Sport has a chic exterior that is free of chrome parts, the X7 is equipped with BMW’s iconic “Iconic Glow” design that highlights the kidney grille with lights, giving it a luxurious feel befitting a flagship.

Range Rover Sport S

Body size = Length 4960mm x Width 2005mm x Height 1820mm

Wheelbase = 2995mm

Vehicle weight = 2490kg

Tire size = 255/60R20

BMW X7 xDrive 40d Excellence

Wheelbase = 3105mm

Vehicle weight = 2560kg

Tire size = 285/45R21

Same 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel + mild hybrid

Both the Range Rover Sport S and the X7 xDrive 40d are equipped with a powertrain that combines a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel turbo with a 48V mild hybrid system. Comparing their specifications, the X7 outperforms the Range Rover Sport by 40 PS in maximum output and 50 Nm in maximum torque. Although the larger X7 weighs about 70 kg more, it takes advantage of its power and torque advantages to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 0.5 seconds.

Range Rover Sport S

Engine type = Inline 6-cylinder diesel turbo + mild hybrid

The glamorous X7 or the sophisticated Range Rover Sport?

The interior of the X7, which reigns at the top of the SAV series, is centered around the familiar “BMW Curved Display,” consisting of a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display. The combination of beautifully polished wood panels and the glass-finish “Crafted Crystal Finish” exudes the dignity befitting a top-of-the-line model. Meanwhile, the interior of the Range Rover Sport, like the exterior, is deliberately kept simple, without any flashy trim.

The seating layout is available in the X7, with a standard “7 seats in 3 rows” configuration, and a “6 seats in 3 rows” configuration with separate seats in the second row. The current Range Rover Sport only has a “5 seats in 2 rows” configuration, so if you want a 3-row seating configuration from the Land Rover lineup, you will need to choose from the Range Rover, Defender 110/130, or Discovery.

The two cars aim for luxury in different directions, but the price of BMW’s flagship “X7 xDrive 40d” is 14.38 million yen, which is 1.8 million yen more than the “Range Rover Sport S.” The X7 is also lavishly equipped with the latest infotainment system and driver assistance functions.

However, it is Land Rover that is making progress in electrification, and while the X7’s high-end 4.4-liter V8 gasoline turbo model is only a mild hybrid, the Range Rover Sport also has a plug-in hybrid model in its lineup that boasts even greater efficiency.

Range Rover Sport S: 12.58 million yen

BMW X7 xDrive 40d Excellence: 14.38 million yen
