A mid-size SUV that is popular in Europe and Japan

The third-generation Audi Q5 is the first SUV model developed based on the new-generation internal combustion engine architecture PPC (Premium Platform Combustion). The Japanese market will be offered with two body styles, SUV and sportback, and three power units.

This time, we will compare the Q5 TDI quattro 150kW, which is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder diesel turbo, from the extensive Q5 lineup, with Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling SUV, the GLC 220 d 4MATIC, which is equipped with the same diesel engine.

Both cars are highly popular in the mid-size SUV segment, which is now extremely popular worldwide, and their exteriors strongly assert the brand’s identity. The GLC is 5mm longer in overall length and 70mm longer in wheelbase than the Q5, but the body sizes are almost the same. Both are diesel AWD models equipped with mild hybrid systems, but the Q5 is about 100kg heavier in terms of vehicle weight.

Audi Q5 TDI quattro 150kW

Body size = Length 4715 x Width 1900 x Height 1655 mm

Wheelbase = 2820 mm

Vehicle weight = 2040 kg

Tire size = 235/60R18

Body size = Length 4720 x Width 1890 x Height 1640 mm

Wheelbase = 2890 mm

Vehicle weight = 1930 kg

Tire size = 235/60R18

2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder diesel + mild hybrid

The power unit is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder diesel turbo that boasts strong torque and high efficiency, combined with a 48V mild hybrid system (the GLC is equipped with an ISG). The Q5 TDI has a maximum output of 7 PS, while the GLC 220 d has a maximum torque of 40 Nm more. Both have the necessary and sufficient specifications for use in urban areas.

Audi Q5 TDI quattro 150kW

Engine type = Inline 4-cylinder diesel turbo + 48V mild hybrid

Displacement = 1968cc

Maximum output = 204PS / 3800-4200rpm

Maximum torque = 400Nm / 1750-3250rpm

Transmission = 7-speed S tronic (DCT)

Drive system = AWD

Mercedes-Benz GLC 220 d 4MATIC

Engine type = Inline 4-cylinder diesel turbo + ISG

Displacement = 1992cc

Maximum output = 197PS/3600rpm

Maximum torque = 440Nm/1800-2800rpm

Transmission = Electronically controlled 9-speed AT

Drive system = AWD

The Q5 has a big advantage in price

The Q5 is equipped with the latest generation of the “Digital Stage,” which combines an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit with curved OLED technology and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. A 10.9-inch MMI passenger display dedicated to the front passenger seat is also available as an option. The GLC 220d features a 12.3-inch digital meter display and a vertical 11.9-inch media display.

Compared to the chic black-based interior space typical of Audi, the GLC 220d has a more luxurious atmosphere, with ventilation reminiscent of a jet exhaust and glossy trim parts.

The two cars are equipped with the same diesel turbo and have almost the same power performance, but the GLC 220d is priced at 880,000 yen more, so the key to success will be whether you can find value in “driving a Mercedes.” However, the GLC Core, a value-for-money grade with limited equipment and body colors, has been introduced to the Japanese market and is priced at 8,190,000 yen, close to the Q5.

Vehicle price

Audi Q5 TDI quattro 150kW 7.88 million yen

Mercedes-Benz GLC 220 d 4MATIC 8.76 million yen
