Both cars come with two body styles

In 2022, Volkswagen will begin selling the ID. Buzz MPV, which pays homage to the company’s iconic Type 2 Van and is equipped with the latest fully electric powertrain. The ID. Buzz is based on Volkswagen’s proprietary fully electric powertrain, the MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix), and will be available in a six-seater “Normal Wheelbase (NWB)” model and a seven-seater “Long Wheelbase (LWB)” model with a wheelbase extended by approximately 250 mm.

Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling MPV, the V-Class, is in its third generation and will undergo a major facelift in 2024. This time, we chose the long-body V 220 d Long, equipped with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder diesel turbo, from the V-Class, which offers a variety of specifications and powertrains to suit different uses.

Both models are long-body, but while the ID. Buzz has an extended wheelbase, the V-Class has a stretched rear overhang. The V-Class is 445mm long, while the ID. Buzz’s wheelbase is 20mm longer. In terms of livability and luggage space, the V-Class has an advantage thanks to its spacious interior length.

Large-capacity battery provides a driving range of over 500km

The ID. Buzz is equipped with a rear-axle motor that produces a maximum output of 286 PS and a maximum torque of 560 Nm. The long wheelbase model has a 91 kWh lithium-ion battery mounted in the floor. With a cruising range of 554 km (WLTC mode), it is quite practical. The V 220 d Long is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder diesel turbo with a maximum output of 163 PS mounted in the front and driven by the rear. Although it is less powerful, it is about 300 kg lighter than the ID. Buzz and combines the high fuel efficiency and high torque that only a diesel can offer.

The only fully electric MPV currently available

The long-wheelbase ID Buzz features a 2-3-2 layout, providing ample seating. The interior ambiance is simple and pop, typical of Volkswagen’s fully electric models. A 5.3-inch driver information display is located behind the steering wheel, and a 12.9-inch touchscreen is located in the center of the instrument panel.

While the ID. Buzz has a more tool-like feel, the V-Class offers the familiar Mercedes-Benz luxury interior space. The cockpit is fitted with two 12.3-inch widescreen displays arranged side-by-side. The latest generation of MBUX has been introduced, allowing for intuitive operation. Captain seats, reminiscent of first class on an airplane, are also available as an option.

Volkswagen has become one of the first to bring a fully electric model to the globally popular MPV segment. The ID. Buzz, with its ample driving range and playful, cute interior and exterior, exudes a unique personality. The V-Class also has a fully electric “EQV” in its lineup, but unfortunately it will not be introduced in the Japanese market, so we will have to wait for the next-generation model, which will soon have its world premiere.
