Mercedes-AMG C 63 SE PERFORMANCE

Big and heavy C 63 SE Performance

Porsche recently announced that it will continue developing internal combustion engine (ICE) models. The 911, which will be updated to the 992.2 model in 2024, is likely to continue to be equipped with the traditional boxer-six engine. This time, we’ll take a look at the 911 Carrera, the entry-level model in the 911 family, which offers a wide range of variations, and compare it with the Mercedes-AMG C 63 SE Performance, a high-performance version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The C 63 SE Performance, which debuted in 2023, features a wide body that is 80 mm wider than the base C-Class sedan, a hood with an air outlet, and other impressive exterior features. The engine at its heart has been changed from the previous model’s 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo to a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo plug-in hybrid.

The 911 Carrera is a two-door coupe that has inherited the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive (RR) layout from the first generation. The four-door sedan C 63 SE Performance is 290mm longer, 50mm wider, and 155mm taller, so when you put them side by side, you can really feel the compactness of the 911 Carrera. In terms of weight, the C 63 SE Performance, equipped with a lithium-ion battery, is 590kg lighter.

Powerful plug-in hybrid power

The 911 Carrera is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-six engine in the rear, producing a maximum output of 394 PS and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. The C 63 SE Performance is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, but the engine alone produces 476 PS, far exceeding the 911 Carrera’s output. Combined with a rear-axle motor, the car achieves a powerful system maximum output of 680 PS. Taking advantage of this power and AWD drivetrain, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 0.7 seconds faster than the 911 Carrera, which is 500 kg lighter.

The unique and alluring 911 Carrera

The 911 Carrera, which modernizes the atmosphere of the first generation, features a 12.65-inch meter panel and a horizontal 10.9-inch touchscreen display in the center of the cockpit. The C 63 SE Performance features a 12.3-inch cockpit display and a vertical 11.9-inch media display. The interior is lavishly decorated with circular air vents and glittering chrome parts.

The C 63 SE Performance, while downsizing its engine to accommodate the introduction of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, delivers powerful performance worthy of the AMG name. It also offers generous rear seats and luggage space not available in the 911 Carrera, which costs 1.39 million yen more.

Even so, the driving feel of the 911 Carrera is unmatched, as it smoothly runs through winding roads with traction on the rear tires. The lineup also includes the 911 GTS (23.79 million yen) equipped with the newly developed T-Hybrid. In other words, the C 63 SE Performance means that you can get a versatile high-performance car at a price lower than the entry-level 911 model.

Is the hybrid Porsche 911 still the best? “Compared to a pure-engine 911”

The GTS, the first 911 to feature a hybrid system, has finally arrived in Japan. The first major change in the 911’s 60-year history since the introduction of water-cooling, the hybrid, will bring about changes to the 911’s driving performance. Let’s clarify the differences by comparing it with the 911 Carrera, which retains its pure engine. (Reprinted and re-edited from the May 2025 issue of GENROQ)

We compared the C 63 SE Performance, which features a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine supplemented by an electric system, with its virtual rivals, the M3 and M4.

A comparison test drive of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S with a maximum output of 680 PS and the BMW M4 with a maximum output of 510 PS

The much-anticipated high-performance sedan, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 SE Performance, has finally arrived. Combining a 2.0-liter engine with an electric turbo and a high-performance motor, it generates an astounding 680 PS of system output and 1,020 Nm of system torque.
